Das Wesen dessen, was unsere Individualität ausmacht, ist bis heute ungewiss geblieben. Die Versuche, den letzten Grund des Individuiertseins in der Materie, in Gott bzw. im Willen als Selbstbestimmung anzusetzen, blieben insofern unvollständig, als das Verhältnis von Sein und Leben dabei nicht wirklich aufgeklärt wurde. Kühns Darstellung bietet daher Rückgriffe von Aristoteles bis Husserl und Heidegger über das Mittelalter, Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Kant, Fichte, Maine de Biran, Hegel, Nietzsche, Simone Weil und Scheler, um die genannte Problematik für die Ausarbeitung eines rein phänomenologischen principium individuationis fruchtbar zu machen. Dabei ergibt sich, dass sich die Individuationsaporie nicht im Rahmen einer Ontologie als "Natur", "Zeit" oder "Seinsereignis" lösen lässt; vielmehr muss das Seinsapriori als solches hinterfragt werden. Hierdurch tritt ein ursprünglicheres Erscheinen zutage, welches im Sinne lebendiger Individuation zu denken ist.
