Abstract

In recent years, the ontological argument and theistic metaphysics have been criticised by philosophers working in both the analytic and continental traditions. Responses to these criticisms have primarily come from philosophers who make use of the traditional, and problematic, concept of God. In this 2006 volume, Daniel A. Dombrowski defends the ontological argument against its contemporary critics, but he does so by using a neoclassical or process concept of God, thereby strengthening the case for a contemporary theistic metaphysics. Relying on the thought of Charles Hartshorne, he builds on Hartshorne's crucial distinction between divine existence and divine actuality, which enables neoclassical defenders of the ontological argument to avoid the familiar criticism that the argument moves illegitimately from an abstract concept to concrete reality. His argument, thus, avoids the problems inherent in the traditional concept of God as static.

Abstract

The revelation of YHWH's name to Moses is a momentous event according to the Old Testament. The name 'Yahweh' is of central importance in Judaism, and 'Yahwism' became tantamount to Jewish monotheism. As such, this designation of God also attracted the attention of pagan writers in the Graeco-Roman period. And early Christians had to deal with this divine name as well. These three perspectives on YHWH constitute the framework for this volume. It appears that the Name of God and its revelation to Moses constitute a major theme which runs from the book of Exodus through the Old Testament, early Judaism, and early Christianity. It also attracted pagan philosophical interest, both positive and negative. The Name of God was not only perceived from an insider's perspective, but also provoked a reaction from outsiders. The combined perspectives show the fundamental importance of the divine Name for the formation of Jewish and Christian identities.

Abstract

This volume analyses the so-called 'Denkschrift' (Isa 6:1-9:6) by focussing on the image of God's Reign. It discusses the literary formation and shows that the idea of God's Reign is the red line connecting independent texts in former times. The study focuses on the literary formation and on the images of God's Reign. Subjects included are the investigation of the literary form of Isa 6, comparisons with neo-assyrian prophecies and royal texts from Egypt and the discussion of literary form and origin of the messianic announcement in Isa 9. The final description of the image of God's Reign gives a deeper insight in the development of theological ideas in ancient Israel and is useful for a closer view on Judah's history of religion between the 8th and 5th centuries B.C.E.

Abstract

Abstract

Can philosophy offer reasonable grounds for the existence of a God as the center of actual faith, rather than just a theoretical Absolute? Timothy Sprigge offers a fascinating exploration of the metaphysical systems of a diverse range of philosophers, from Spinoza and Hegel to T. H. Green and Josiah Royce, testing objections to what might be called "metaphysical religion" against the systems of these distinguished thinkers. In the process, Sprigge offers a compelling new defense of a highly unfashionable Idealist worldview.

Abstract

Passionnant
