FROM THE PREFACE:The original purpose of the First Edition of Physiology of the Gastrointestinal Tract?to collect in one set of volumes the most current and comprehensive knowledge in our field?was also the driving force for the Fourth Edition. The explosion of information at the cellular level, made possible in part by the continued emergence of powerful molecular and cellular techniques, has resulted in a greater degree of revision than that of any other edition. The first section, now titled ""Basic Cell Physiology and Growth of the Gl Tract"" contains numerous new chapters o

This reference supplies a comprehensive and current overview of every aspect of gastrointestinal microbiota. Expertly written chapters cover conventional and molecular techniques for the study of differing microbial populations, as well as the analysis of microbial activity and interaction with host bodies. Illustrative and up-to-date, this source showcases how fluctuations in our diet, environment, and pharmaceutical intake affect microbial composition and behavior.

Endoscopic Oncology: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Cancer Management examines the interface between endoscopy and oncology, and its utilization in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of cancer. Organized anatomically, chapters covering relevant cancers and premalignant conditions of the esophagus, stomach, colorectum, and pancreaticobiliary are explored in depth. This volume presents the reader with chapters summarizing state-of-the-art endoscopic medical and surgical cancer treatment, including endoscopic mucosal resection, photodynamic therapy, and palliative stent placement. Extensive coverage is given to colonoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, esophagogastroduodendoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, and all of the major endoscopic procedures. Endoscopic Oncology: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Cancer Management is written with the practicing endoscopist in mind. Given the multidisciplinary approach of modern cancer care, this book is a must have for all health care professionals who take care of cancer patients, including medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and surgeons.

Colorectal surgery is a rapidly-evolving surgical field. Innovative procedures, including advanced endoscopy and minimally invasive surgery, are allowing surgeons to offer patients ever-improving treatment options and better surgical outcomes than ever before. Since the last edition of the full volume of Chassin’s Operative Strategies in General Surgery, laparoscopic colon surgery has become the new standard of care in many surgical centers. Thus, for Chassin’s Operative Strategies in Colon and Rectal Surgery, we have added four new, previously unpublished chapters to this new volume: laparoscopic right hemicolectomy and laparoscopic left hemicolectomy; laparoscopic stoma construction and closure; laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection; and total proctocolectomy with end ileostomy. These new chapters provide the reader with the latest techniques in colorectal surgery. In addition to the clear, comprehensive text, these new chapters are enhanced by 52 lavish new illustrations. While the text provides the reader a with clear, step-by-step instructions, the illustrations provide the visual orientation so important to every surgeon's pre-operative preparations. .

This, the fifth volume in the Proteases in Biology and Disease series, is devoted to Proteases in Gastrointestinal Tissues. Of course, proteases play an important role in the digestion and utilization of ingested proteins, but besides that they elicit a wide range of physiological and pathological effects. Proteases have been recognized as essential regulators, acting both locally and systemically, of normal development, growth and functioning. Dysregulation of protease expression and/or enzymatic activity is often associated with the onset or progression of disease and, thus, proteases represent interesting targets for the pharmacological therapy of e. g. cancer, chronic inflammation, graft rejection, fibrosis, diabetes, vascular disease, and viral or bacterial infections. In addition, changes in the localization, abundance or activity of proteases may serve as informative diagnostic or prognostic markers. This volume focuses on stomach, gut, pancreas, and liver and highlights the role of proteases in normal physiology and disease processes involving these tissues. The first chapter by Nigel W. Bunnett and Graeme S. Cottrell reviews the current knowledge about the protease-activated receptors (PARs) in gastrointestinal tissues. Starting with the mechanisms of activation, signal transduction, and regulation of PAR, their role in controlling gastrointestinal functions and the possible involvement in gastrointestinal diseases are summarized. In Chapter 2, Nikhil I. Khushalani and Nithya Ramnath review the role of matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) and their natural inhibitors, TIMPs, in different types of gastric cancer.
