Banlieue, bidonville, ghetto, slum, taudis... Souvent un mot désignant un espace urbain qualifie en même temps les populations auxquelles on l'associe, en leur assignant une identité comme concentrée en un vocable. Directe ou biaise, brutale ou euphémisée, la stigmatisation urbaine concerne des lieux marqués par la pauvreté, la dégradation, toutes sortes de menace sur lesquelles est porté un regard inquiet par les classes supérieures, les mouvements de réforme et les législations sanitaires... Du Brésil aux États-Unis d'Amérique, en passant par le monde arabe, la Turquie, la Grande-Bretagne et la France, ce livre s'attache à la façon dont les mots de la ville interviennent dans cette stigmatisation urbaine. Il traite des enjeux sociaux et politiques dont ils sont tantôt les instruments tantôt les enjeux (mais, toujours, les révélateurs) et aux divers remaniements de sens, conversions ou inversions séman­tiques opérés aussi bien par l'usage ordinaire que par les classifications savantes ou techniques.

Das Institut für Mobilitätsforschung ist eine Einrichtung der BMW Group. Es beschäftigt sich mit den künftigen Entwicklungen auf dem Gebiet der Mobilität, wobei Auto-Mobilität nur eine Facette von vielen ist. Behandelt werden sozialwissenschaftliche, gesellschaftspolitische, ökonomische und ökologische, aber auch kulturwissenschaftliche Fragestellungen im Zusammenhang mit den wesentlichen Herausforderungen in der Zukunft. Ziel ist es, in einem vernetzten Umfeld dazu beizutragen, langfristig eine nachhaltige und gesellschaftlich akzeptierte Mobilität zu sichern. Begleitet und unterstützt wird die Arbeit des Instituts von einem Kreis interdisziplinärer Wissenschaftler sowie Vertretern der Deutschen Bahn, der Deutschen Lufthansa und der MAN AG. Der öffentliche Personennahverkehr (ÖPNV) steht vor wachsenden Herausforderungen und Chancen: Zunehmende Engpässe bei den öffentlichen Haushalten, fortschreitende Liberalisierungsprozesse, steigende Umweltanforderungen, Veränderungen der regionalen Bevölkerungskonzentration durch Migration sowie eine älter werdende Gesellschaft sind einige der sich ändernden Rahmenbedingungen. Vor diesem Hintergrund hat das Institut für Mobilitätsforschung künftige Entwicklungen im Zusammenhang mit dem öffentlichen Personennahverkehr im Kreis von Fachexperten ausführlich diskutiert und dokumentiert. In drei Themenblöcken werden verschiedene Aspekte der veränderten Rahmenbedingungen, der Anforderungen von (potenziellen) Kunden sowie tatsächliche und mögliche Angebotsstrategien aus wissenschaftlicher und praktischer Sicht dargestellt. Das Buch soll einen Beitrag zur notwendigen Auseinandersetzung über die Zukunft des öffentlichen Personennahverkehrs leisten und die Vorstellungen von einem attraktiven ÖPNV weiter konkretisieren.

Chinese production of automobiles rose from 42,000 cars per year in 1990 to 2.3 million in 2004; the number of passenger vehicles on the road doubled every two and a half years through the 1990s and continues to grow. In China Shifts Gears, Kelly Sims Gallagher identifies an unprecedented opportunity for China to "shift gears" and avoid the usual problems associated with the automobile industry -- including urban air pollution caused by tailpipe emissions, greenhouse gas emissions, and high dependence on oil imports -- while spurring economic development. This transformation will only take place if the Chinese government plays a leadership role in building domestic technological capacity and pushing foreign automakers to transfer cleaner and more energy-efficient technologies to China. If every new car sold in China had the cleanest and most energy-efficient of the automotive technologies already available, urban air pollution could be minimized, emissions of climate-altering greenhouse gases would be lower than projected, and the Chinese auto industry would continue to flourish and contribute to China's steady economic development. But so far, Gallagher finds, the opportunity to shift gears has been missed. Gallagher looks in detail at three U.S.-Chinese joint ventures: Beijing Jeep, Shanghai GM, and Chang'An Ford. These case studies are based on original research, including interviews with 90 government officials, industry representatives, and experts in both countries. Drawing from the case studies, Gallagher explores the larger issues of the environmental and economic effects of technology transfer in the automobile industry and the policy implications of "leapfrogging" to more advanced technology.
