Abstract

Headache and Chronic Pain Syndromes provides a case-based approach to state-of-the-art evaluation and treatment of patients with common chronically painful conditions. Offering strategies for rapidly evaluating and treating pain complaints by body region, this innovative title also provides patient educational handouts that explain the diagnosis and treatment in easy-to-understand language for each condition. Tools for implementing both medication and non-medication therapies, such as exercises and relaxation techniques, are also included. Each chapter opens with typical presentations of three to five common patient scenarios, including pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients. A targeted approach for patient assessment is provided and applied to each scenario, showing how to rapidly identify important clues to distinguish among common diagnoses, including both benign and malignant causes of pain. Standard treatment regimens are then provided for each patient, along with patient-friendly educational flyers for each common pain condition. Figures and drawings help provide ready identification of these common chronic pain syndromes. Headache and Chronic Pain Syndromes offers primary care practitioners, neurologists, and orthopedists an optimal approach to the evaluation, treatment, and follow-up of chronically painful conditions.

Abstract

Abstract

To improve quality of life for cancer patients has been the endeavour of the author for the past 25 years in rehabilitation and palliation. To maintain quality of life is an important challenge not only for health aftercare service, but also in palliative and terminal situations. The invasiveness of some of the current therapies and the restricted life expectancy of many patients led to the change in therapeutic paradigms. Rehabilitation and palliation have become an essential part of modern comprehensive cancer care. There are many excellent text books in cancer management which provide therapeutic recommendations thereby influencing the disease. Quality of life is now the second parameter after survival used to evaluate the effectiveness of first line oncologial therapies and is still the first parameter of most therapies in the case of recurrence. It contains experiences of the author and specific instructions how to assess, treat and evaluate rehabilitative and palliative measures.

Abstract

Neuromodulation is a rapidly evolving multidisciplinary biomedical and biotechnological field. The two volumes present the state-of-the-art in established and emerging applications for pain, spasticity, movement disorders, bladder and bowel dysfunction, cardiovascular disease, epilepsy, psychiatric illness, impairment of hearing and vision, and computational neuromodulation. Experts describe the neural networks involved and the appropriate surgical approaches, provide clinical guidelines, technical descriptions of implanted devices, proposals for refinements and personal views on future prospects of the field. The immense therapeutic potential is highlighted which arises from the close collaboration of biomedical scientists and biotechnological engineers in this area and signifies the transition from the conventional "resective" surgery to functional neuroprosthetic surgery (Vol. I) and neural networks surgery (Vol. II) which uses neuro-engineering to improve impaired neural function. Vol. 2 describes the techniques and procedures applied by direct a) contact with the central nervous system or cranial nerves, in order to modulate the function of neural networks as in the case of motor cortext stimulation for pain or vagus nerve stimulation for epilepsy, or b) in deeply located structures inside the nervous system, in order to alter the function on specific networks as in the case of deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease.

Volume I describes techniques and procedures applied in internal contact with non-neural tissues surrounding the nervous system (dura or cerebrospinal fluid), as in the case of epidural stimulation for pain, etc. or intrathecal drug application for the treatment of spasticity and pain. There is also a special section on non-invasive functional neuroprosthetic systems, which are usually applied by transcutaneous contact with the nervous system.

Abstract

Disease whether it is acute, chronic, or at end stage, is all too regularly accompanied by pain. Pain is often difficult to control, in malignant disease in particular, even by using appropriate medications. Anesthesiologists and pain therapists have developed new invasive therapies including nerve block, sympatholysis, and neurolysis useful for both diagnosis and pain management. To insure the efficiency and safety of these procedures, and furthermore for elaborate techniques such as vertebroplasty, cementoplasty, and radio frequency bone ablation, imaging guidance becomes mandatory. This state-of-the-art book describes the techniques elaborated by interventional radiologists in the treatment and palliation of a variety of benign and malignant painful conditions. Each chapter written by an expert in the field concentrates on a particular aspect of pain management, with emphasis on practical issues. This book will serve as an invaluable source of information for the radiologist willing to learn about new pain therapy techniques aimed at optimizing or replacing more invasive traditional methods.
