ICEM13 focused on all aspects of experimental mechanics of solids with emphasis on mechanical characterization and testing at the micro and nano scale levels. The technical program of ICEM13 was the product of hard work and devotion of more than 100 world leading experts. This volume contains two-page abstracts of the 482 papers presented at ICEM13. The accompanying CD contains the full length papers. The abstracts of the fifteen plenary lectures are included in the beginning of the book. The remaining 467 abstracts are arranged in 23 tracks and 28 special symposia/sessions with 225 and 242 abstracts, respectively. The papers of the tracks have been contributed from open call, while the papers of the symposia/sessions have been solicited by the respective organizers. The volume contains the latest research work of renowned experts in experimental analysis of engineering materials and structures and is useful for students, engineers and researchers who want to get an integrated picture of the recent developments in the area of experimental mechanics.

Recently, we have seen that nano-structured materials demonstrate remarkable - vantagesoverconventionalones, particularlyinmechanicalbehaviors.Thiswill have a great impact on new technologyand engineeringin the new millennium. In acco- ance with this need, IUTAM decided to hold a symposium to discuss the prospect of the wonderful mechanical behaviors of nanostructured materials and their relevant micro-mechanics, to encourage the mechanics community to explore the frontier of scienceandtechnology.Theaimofthesymposiumwasto providesucha forumto all expertsinbothmechanicsandmaterialsciencesworldwide, tohaveanopportunityto exchange their research achievements and views in understanding these mechanical behaviors, exploring their applications, as well as enhancing their property designs of nanostrucutred materials. The IUTAM Symposium on Mechanical Behavior and Micro-mechanics of Nanostructured Materials was held successfully in Beijing, China, June 27-30, 2005. Thirty participants with different research backgrounds including mechanics, materials sciences, physics, etc. from Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore, UK and USA and China presented their contributions on various aspects closely - lated to the subjects, displaying wide research direction and progress.

This volume on multiscaling has been motivated by the advancement of nano-technology in the past four decades. In particular, nano-electronics has paved the way to show that the behavior of nano-size bodies are not only different from macro-size bodies but they do not obey the same physical laws. There appears to be a mesoscopic region which separates the laws of quantum physics and continuum mechanics. A gap has been left in the full range of scaling from macro to nano. Micro-manipulation can be made more effective if the atomic and molecular scale activities can be identified more precisely with the use specific objectives. In this respect, material science has already benefited by positioning and structuring of nanometer-scale particles to arrive at the desired macroscopic material properties. The idea has been implemented to tailor-make structural materials for the Boeing 787 to better accommodate non-uniform stress and strain at different locations of the aircraft. Explored are also the possibility of coaxing DNA-based organisms such as viruses to improve performance of batteries, solar cells, fabrics, paints and other kinds of materials. The potential of assembling bio-molecules to build electronic components is also in the planning. The manipulation of molecules and atoms has been regarded as a common base for both material and life science. Quantum and continuum mechanics are being applied side by side for exploring the behavior of small and large objects moving at fast and slow speed.
