Abstract

1. The birth of the electronic journal In the autumn of 1987 Michael Ehringhaus and Bird Stasz of Syracuse University launched New horizons in adult education, probably the very first refereed scientific journal to be published in electronic form ( g. 1. 1). The rst issue was sent over the Adult Education Network (AEDNET). The journal still 2 exists today. In March 1991 Ted Jennings of the University at Albany (State 3 University of New York) launched EJournal, described as an ‘electronic journal concerned with the implications of electronic networks and texts’ ( g. 1. 2), coining the now popular term e-journal. The Online journal of current clinical trials, published from September 1991, has been described as the first peer 45 reviewed electronic journal in medicine. How significant is the phenomenon of the scientific electronic journal today, more than a decade and a half after its introduction? Over this period information and communication technologies (ICT) have been an important factor in the development of scientific communication. Applications such as communication over digital networks (converging towards a single network – the Internet), the use of computerized systems for creating, storing and retrieving 1 The scientific journal is also referred to as ‘scholarly’ or ‘research’ journal. We use the former term in this study. 2 Although no longer distributed over AEDNET but through the World Wide Web. The first issue is now ? available at http://www. nova. edu/ aed/horizons/vol1n1.

Abstract

Lars Lindberg Christensen is a science communication specialist and works in Munich, Germany, as head of communication for the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope in Europe. Many people know something about communication – it is after all an innate human ability – but a full comprehension of how to do science communication effectively is not acquired easily. This Guide touches upon all aspects of science communication, revealing a tightly interwoven fabric of issues: product types, target groups, written communication, visual communication, validation processes, practices of efficient workflow, distribution, promotion, advertising and much more. New science communicators will find this Guide both helpful and inspirational. "I am overwhelmed at how thorough and how well thought-through this book is. Even with my regular relationships with popular communication and with public relations officers, I hadn’t realized how well documented the field could be until I saw it done here." -Jay M. Pasachoff, Williams College, President, IAU Commission on Education and Development, author of The Cosmos: Astronomy in the New Millennium and The Complete Idiot’s Guide to the Sun "I would have expected a high standard from a public outreach scientist at the European Space Agency, but this soars way above the normal standard of competence. I have certainly learned a great deal from this guide. It deserves a wide readership among science communicators." -Simon Mitton, Author of Conflict in the Cosmos: Fred Hoyle’s Life in Science and Editor of The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Astronomy" Christensen uses clear principles and well-chosen examples, along with tables, diagrams, and even a press release visibility scale to convey the art and science of Science Communication in an authoritative and illuminating manner." -Stephen P. Maran, Press Officer, AAS, Editor, The Astronomy and Astrophysics Encyclopedia "This book is very well presented, in a good-humored style, with an abundance of practical details. It is a fundamental contribution to the field of science communication towards the public. It is a filling a gap." -Andre Heck, Astronomer, Editor of Astronomy Communication and the Organization and Strategies in Astronomy series.

Abstract

Do popular forms of representing politics in the media endanger the quality of public communication? Or do they provide an appropriate modern entertaining way of putting politics across to wide sectors of the public? The present volume takes up this current discussion from a linguistic point of view. Anybody enquiring into changing political processes an a media society should look carefully at the evidence and beware of idealising myths, false comparisons and overhasty conclusions.

Abstract

The book contains a series of 40 articles written by forward-thinking speakers who presented their findings at the "Communicating European Research 2005" event which was organised by the European Commission in Brussels on 14-15 November 2005. This event was attended by well over 2,100 participants. The contents of this book clearly illustrate that a highly important element of research projects funded by the European Union is communication. Authors include scientists, journalists and communication professionals. The book covers the main aspects of science and technology communication today and addresses topical questions such as: Is science journalism necessary at all? Should communication become one of the basic skills of scientists, as compulsory as thinking, testing and experimenting? Should our schools of the future put scientific literacy at the top of the science curriculum? Do we need science critics? Does the coverage of science in the media reflect the choice of the editors or does it accurately mirror the public’s interest? How does one capture the public’s attention when promoting science on local, commercial or entertainment radio? Why would we need standards in science communication? How can we remove any obstacles to communication among researchers and between researchers? The book casts light on these issues and many others. It offers a selection of good practices and professional services to scientists and science communicators, and should help them design and carry out their communication activities with a European and international dimension.
