Abstract

The International Conference on Case-Based Reasoning (ICCBR) is the pre-eminent international meeting on case-based reasoning (CBR). ICCBR 2007 (http://www.iccbr.org./iccbr07/) was the seventh in this series, presenting the most significant contributions in the field of CBR. The conference took place in Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK, during August 13-16, 2007. ICCBR and its sister conferences ECCBR (European Conference on Case-Based Reasoning) alternate every year. ICCBR 2007 followed a series of six successful international conferences previously held in Sesimbra, Portugal (1995); Providence, Rhode Island, USA (1997); Seeon, Germany (1999); Vancouver, Canada (2001); Trondheim, Norway (2003); and C- cago, Illinois, USA (2005). The European Conferences on Case-Based Reasoning (ECCBR) were held as European workshops in Kaiserslautern, Germany (1993); Chantilly, France (1994); Lausanne, Switzerland (1996); Dublin, Ireland (1998); and Trento, Italy (2000); and as European conferences in Aberdeen, UK (2002); Madrid, Spain (2004); and Lykia World, Turkey (2006). Days one, two, and four comprised presentations and posters on theoretical and - plied CBR research. In order to emphasize the importance of applications, the traditional industry day was converted into an Industry Program held on the second day, in the middle of the conference. Day three was devoted to five workshops: Case-Based Reasoning and Context-Awareness; Case-Based Reasoning in the Health Sciences; Textual Case-Based Reasoning: Beyond Retrieval; Uncertainty and Fuzziness in Case- Based Reasoning; and Knowledge Discovery and Similarity.

Abstract

This book comprises a selection of papers from IFSA 2007 on new methods for analysis and design of hybrid intelligent systems using soft computing techniques. Soft Computing (SC) consists of several computing paradigms, including fuzzy logic, neural networks, and genetic algorithms, which can be used to produce powerful hybrid intelligent systems for solving problems in pattern recognition, time series prediction, intelligent control, robotics and automation. Hybrid intelligent systems that combine several SC techniques are needed due to the complexity and high dimensionality of real-world problems. Hybrid intelligent systems can have different architectures, which have an impact on the efficiency and accuracy of these systems, for this reason it is very important to optimize architecture design. The architectures can combine, in different ways, neural networks, fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms, to achieve the ultimate goal of pattern recognition, time series prediction, intelligent control, or other application areas.

Abstract

Weareproudtopresenttheproceedingsoftheseventhbiennialconferenceinthe Intelligent Data Analysis series. The conference took place in Ljubljana, Slo- nia, September 6-8, 2007. IDA continues to expand its scope, quality and size. It started as a small side-symposium as part of a larger conference in 1995 in Baden-Baden(Germany).It quickly attractedmoreinterest in both submissions and attendance as it moved to London (1997) and then Amsterdam (1999). The next three meetings were held in Lisbon (2001), Berlin (2003) and then Madrid in 2005. The improving quality of the submissions has enabled the organizers to assemble programs of ever-increasing consistency and quality. This year we madea rigorousselectionof33papersoutofalmost100submissions.Theresu- ing oral presentations were then scheduled in a single-track, two-and-a-half-day conference program, summarized in the book that you have before you. In accordance with the stated IDA goal of “bringing together researchers from diverse disciplines,” we believe we have achieved an excellent balance of presentationsfromthemoretheoretical–bothstatisticalandmachinelearning– to the more application-oriented areas that illustrate how these techniques can beusedinpractice.Forexample, theproceedingsincludepaperswiththeoretical contributions dealing with statistical approaches to sequence alignment as well as papers addressing practical problems in the areas of text classi?cation and medical data analysis. It is reassuring to see that IDA continues to bring such diverse areas together, thus helping to cross-fertilize these ?elds.

Abstract

The annual international conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications (DEXA) is now well established as a reference scientific event. The reader will find in this volume a collection of scientific papers that represent the state of the art of - search in the domain of data, information and knowledge management, intelligent systems, and their applications. The 18th instance of the series of DEXA conferences was held at the University of Regensburg, Germany, September 3–7, 2007. Several collocated conferences and workshops covered specialized and complimentary topics to the main conference topic. Six conferences—the Eighth International Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery (DaWaK), the Seventh International Conference on Electronic Commerce and Web Technologies (EC-Web), the Fifth International Conference on Electronic Government (EGOV), the 3rd International Conference on Trust, Privacy, and Security in Digital Business (TrustBus), the 3rd International Conference on Industrial Applications of Holonic and Multi-Agent Systems (HoloMAS), and the 1st International Conference on N- work-Based Information Systems (NBiS)—and 19 workshops were collocated with DEXA. The conference is a unique international event with a balanced depth and breadth of topics. Its much appreciated conviviality fosters unmatched opportunities to meet, share the latest scientific results and discuss the latest technological advances in the area of information technologies with young scientists and engineers as well as senior world-renown experts.

Abstract

The research of holonic and agent-based systems is developing rapidly, as is the community around this R&D topic. Despite the fact that real-life practical implementations of such systems remain surprisingly rare, the leaders in different branches of industry feel that the holonic and agent-based systems represent the only way to manage and control very complex, highly distributed systems in the future. The relevant R&D gains more and more support from both industry as well as academic sources. Quite naturally, the number of scientific events aimed at the subject field is also growing rapidly. We can see new lines of conferences like INDIN, while we can observe a strong focus of the already well-established conferences, like INCOM or ETFA, being shifted toward holonic and agent-based manufacturing systems. This is a good sign of the increasing recognition and importance of the field. We are convinced of the worth and importance of the continuation of the HoloMAS events, which have served as pioneering melting pots for ideas connected with distributed decision making and control in industry and which have already gained international reputation.

Abstract

The papers in this volume were presented at TMRA 2006, the International Conference on Topic Maps Research and Applications, held October 11–12, 2006, in Leipzig, Germany. TMRA 2006 was the second conference of an annual series of international conferences dedicated to Topic Maps in research and industry. Topic maps are continuously gaining more and more attention in science and industry; they are “crossing the chasm.” The TMRA series provides a platform for researchers in the topic maps community to meet for exciting exchanges in a stimulating setting. The uniqueness of TMRA is its focus on both sides of the same coin: scientific research on topic maps and upcoming applications in industry. In the autumn of 2005 the first TMRA conference took place in Leipzig. The proceedings have been published in this LNAI series as volume 3873. It was amazing to see how ideas and solutions from TMRA 2005 matured within the last year to full products or projects. The overall success of TMRA 2005 encouraged us to improve this conference series for the topic maps community: More people were attracted, and the scientific quality was enhanced. The TMRA 2006 program attracted a very international crowd of about 80 attendees, hosted in the completely new media campus of the Leipzig Media Foundation.
