Abstract

The first edition of this superb, two-volume atlas on surgery of the biliary tract, pancreas and liver was published nearly 20 years ago. Dr. Cameron has revisited and updated this classic work to include laparoscopic techniques and to demonstrate the current status of gastrointestinal surgical procedures. Written for the experienced surgeon, this two-volume work is beautifully illustrated with anatomical watercolor paintings by co-author Corinne Sandone that elevate the work to a level not seen in other atlases. The goal of this volume is to present the alimentary tract procedures performed and in some instances initiated at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in such a fashion that other alimentary tract surgeons can learn these techniques and perform them successfully. KEY FEATURES Includes operative procedures on the gall bladder and biliary tract, liver (including shunts), pancreas, spleen, and the esophagus. Both open and laparoscopic approaches are described for many of the procedures. The artwork provides clarity that a camera cannot capture, yet maintains the realism of the perioperative field. Illustrations depict views that cannot be photographed: conceptual images, cut-away views, and distillations of visual information not easily observed in the operating room. John L. Cameron is the The Alfred Blalock Distinguished Service Professor of the Department of Surgery, The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Baltimore, Maryland. He has operated upon more patients with pancreatic cancer, and done more Whipple resections than any other surgeon in the world. He has been a leader in Alimentary Tract Surgery for many years. National leadership positions held include being President of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, President of the Southern Surgical Association, President of the Society of Clinical Surgery, President of the Society of Surgical Chairman, President of the Halsted Society, and President of the American Surgical Association. Corinne Sandone, Director of the graduate program in Medical and Biological Illustrations since 2013, specializes in surgical illustration and has used watercolor to create several large, color surgical atlases. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine. She is a board-certified medical illustrator (CMI).

Abstract

Atlas of Upper Gastrointestinal and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery covers in detail the technical aspects of all important procedures of the upper abdomen (esophagus, duodenum, stomach, liver, biliary system, pancreas, portal hypertension and spleen) including general, oncologic and transplantation surgery. Each chapter has been written by an expert renowned in his or her field and been reviewed by a second expert. All of the approximately 900 illustrations have been drawn by the same team of three artists of notable experience. The liver section follows the internationally accepted terminology of the Brisbane 2000 conference of the IHPBA. In this atlas experts of upper abdominal surgery share their experience and show how they do it - step by step.

Abstract

Transabdominal ultrasound has become accepted in clinical practice as a primary imaging procedure in the diagnostic work-up and follow-up of various disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the use of ultrasound in the imaging of acute and chronic inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract as well as of neoplastic and infectious diseases. The specific ultrasound features of gastrointestinal disorders are explained, and the value and limits of ultrasound are discussed. Each chapter provides a description of the findings obtained with ultrasound imaging, with inclusion of alternative diagnostic imaging methods for comparative purposes. Specific technical developments and applications of ultrasound relevant to studies of the gastrointestinal tract, such as functional and 3D ultrasound, contrast agents and operative ultrasound, are also discussed. All authors are considered authorities in their specific fields, and the book includes many high-quality illustrations and the most up-to-date information.
