Seventy years ago, the artist and illustrator Eric Ravilious created a snapshot of British life, in a series of 24 lithographs of high street shops. With text by J.M. Richards, they were published as High Street in a run of 2000 by Country Life in 1938. Mainstone Press have now reproduced the original lithographs and text in a new limited edition. Also included are a range of illustrations, preparatory drawings and sketches, many of them published for the first time, and two new essays. Art historian Dr Alan Powers places the book in historical context, giving new and significant insights into its conception, production and publication, and in 'High Street at Seventy', James Russell recounts his search to trace the original businesses.
