This timely volume addresses the areas of pathophysiology and therapy of pulmonary hypertension, which have seen exciting developments over the past decade. The discoveries of endothelin overexpression as well as prostacyclin and nitric oxide deficiency in association with pulmonary hypertension have led to important therapeutic insights. In addition, the identification of genes associated with pulmonary hypertension has just begun to open the door to new pathophysiologic insights. The new therapies have led to significant improvements in patient function, quality of life and survival. This book will be of interest not only to cardiologists, pulmonary specialists and rheumatologists, but also many nurses and pharmacotherapists are becoming increasingly involved in the therapy of patients with pulmonary hypertension.

Atlas of Psoriatic Arthritis Eds. Mease and Helliwell A visual guide to the complex and inter-related diseases of psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis, this volume contains more than 150 images spanning a wide spectrum of variations of the disease. Each chapter comprises an introductory overview, along with a series of relevant images and tables in which the key information on each topic is outlined. The content is comprehensive and authoritative, featuring contributions from leading experts who chart the diseases from diagnosis through to clinical treatment. This book contains an expansive but simple to digest summary of the subject, featuring up-to-date discussion by renowned field practitioners on the following areas: Epidemiology Aetiology and pathogenesis Clinical evaluation Paediatric psoriatic arthritis Imaging Skin disease Management of psoriasis Treatment of psoriatic arthritis Along with charting the rise of radiological imaging in the subject, the book also includes sections on juvenile psoriatic arthritis, which will aid clinicians in distinguishing the characteristics and features of the disease in children, as well as discussions of clinical drug trials. Overall, the book will be of particular interest to rheumatologists, dermatologists, and family practitioners, with the atlas’ images especially providing an essential reference library.

Tissue engineering is gaining interest as it is applied for regeneration of organs to attain their lost function. Although resorbable scaffolds and progenitor cell types are required principles to engineer a functional tissue locally, the inductive signal is a prerequisite to trigger the growth and differentiation of responding cells in space and time. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), also called growth and differentiation factors (GDFs), originally identified from bone have been successfully used to regenerate the bone in humans. Most recent preclinical data suggests that BMPs have a potential to provide protection against inflammation and fibrosis in acute and chronic injury of parenchymal tissues when applied systemically to sustain the function of kidney and liver. The application of BMPs from a local to systemic utility is a rapidly growing field, gaining interest among researchers and biotech entrepreneurs. In this volume, we summarize the advances made on the local and systemic use of BMPs including chapters covering the regulation of BMP-signalling pathways, biological actions of BMPs in bone, cartilage and teeth, as well as clinical applications and potential systemic use of BMPs for tissues beyond bone. This volume is of interest to researchers from immunology, cell biology, biochemistry, and clinicians from orthopedics and dentistry, as well as to research managers from biotech and pharmaceutical companies.

Edited by two leading orthopedic surgeons who are specialists in the treatment of hemophilia, Orthopedic Surgery in Patients with Hemophilia shows all the surgical techniques needed for surgical treatment of musculoskeletal complications of hemophilia. A practical guide, designed for use on the ward or in the office, this book draws on the experience of numerous specialists worldwide, from developed and developing countries. As well as orthopedic surgery, it also covers research, hematology, and rehabilitation. Although of primary interest to the orthopedic surgeon, rheumatologist, and physiotherapist, this book will also be relevant to the hematologist responsible for the care of the hemophiliac patient.

According to the Autoimmune Diseases Coordinating Committee (ADCC), between 14.7 and 23.5 million people in the USA–up to eight percent of the population–are affected by autoimmune disease. Autoimmune diseases are a family of more than 100 chronic, and often disabling, illnesses that develop when underlying defects in the immune system lead the body to attack its own organs, tissues, and cells. In Diagnostic Criteria in Autoimmune Disease, the editors have gathered in a comprehensive handbook a critical review, by renowned experts, of more than 100 autoimmune diseases, divided into two main groups, namely systemic and organ-specific autoimmune diseases. A contemporary overview of these conditions with special emphasis on diagnosis is presented. Each chapter contains the essential information required by attending physicians as well as bench scientists to understand the definition of a specific autoimmune disease, the diagnostic criteria, and the treatment.

It is difficult, if not impossible, for health care providers to remain at the forefront of knowledge for all aspects of nutrition and rheumatic diseases. In Nutrition and Rheumatic Disease, experts provide a comprehensive review of current knowledge regarding nutrition and dietary management for the complex set of rheumatic conditions. Within the disease-specific chapters, the authors present a historical perspective, a discussion of the major clinical features, current management and treatment, a review of the literature related to nutritional status and diet, and dietary recommendations, based on current scientific evidence. The field of rheumatic diseases includes a wide variety of pathologic processes. Adequate reviews of the scientific literature on each of the rheumatic diseases in Nutrition and Rheumatic Disease alleviate the inherent confusion surrounding the risks and benefits of various dietary therapies.
