In einem disziplinären und exemplarischen Zugriff werden die übersetzungstheoretischen Ausführungen des deutschen Latinisten Manfred Fuhrmann (1925-2005) ins Zentrum gestellt sowie dessen Übertragungstätigkeit (v. a. die Reden Ciceros) als Teil der Vermittlung der Antike aufgearbeitet. Die Darstellung der Theoriegeschichte geht von den Äußerungen Fuhrmanns aus und erweitert sie. Schwerpunkt ist die Diskussion der Übersetzungstheorie ab der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Fuhrmanns Überlegungen werden daraufhin untersucht, inwieweit sie einen paradigmatischen Beitrag zur Theorie des Übersetzens im 20. Jahrhundert liefern und welche Systematisierungsvorschläge er für das Übersetzen antiker Literatur, speziell von Prosatexten, bietet. Mit der Frage nach Ausgangs- oder Zielsprachenorientierung wird zugleich diskutiert, welche Antike für die Gegenwart übersetzt, transformiert werden soll. Analysen der Cicero-Übersetzungen bieten konkretes Material für die Beantwortung der Frage, welcher Transformation Fuhrmann den antiken Redner unterzieht.

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is one of the most widely read novels of all time. Its two central characters, the scientist Victor Frankenstein and the being he creates, have gained mythic status in their own right. Engaging with the novel's characterization is crucial to gaining a real understanding of its themes and contexts, including education, gender difference, imperialism, personal identity, revolutionary politics, and science. This study includes: an introductory overview of the novel, including a brief account of its historical and literary contexts; its reception history; discussion of the major themes and narrative structure; detailed analysis of, the representation of main characters, such as Walton, Frankenstein, and the creature; and a conclusion reminding students of the links between the characters and the key themes and issues.
