Designed for senior electrical engineering students, this textbook explores the theoretical concepts of digital signal processing and communication systems, using practical laboratory experiments with real-time DSP hardware. Originally designed with older Texas Instruments models in mind, this new edition updates the experiments to incorporate the TMS320C6713TM DSK, while remaining relevant for other DSP boards. The C6713TM DSK is now the preferred board in educational DSP labs; this edition stays current with these new changes in the field. The primary focus of this book is communication systems, including algorithms that are particularly suited to DSP implementation. Software and hardware tools are introduced, as well as FIR and IIR digital filters and the FFT. This book also discusses modulators and demodulators for classical analog modulation methods such as amplitude modulation (AM), double-sideband suppressed-carrier amplitude modulation (DSBSC-AM), single sideband modulation (SSB), and frequency modulation (FM). The second half of the book explores digital communication methods leading to the implementation of a telephone-line modem. This new edition also incorporates a comprehensive discussion of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), which is particularly pertinent as the world is heavily turning towards using wireless wideband communication. Methods for adaptive equalization, carrier recovery, and symbol clock tracking are presented as well, with suggestions for additional experiments. Steven A. Tretter received the BSEE degree from the University of Maryland in 1962 and the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University in 1966. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park. His areas of expertise include communication systems, digital signal processing, and error correcting codes. He has been a consultant to several telephone-line modem manufacturers since 1970. Many of the algorithms presented in this book were developed for and are used in commercial DSP-based modems. He is presently a consultant to a group at Texas Instruments in Germantown, MD, creating optimized DSP code for wireless OFDM systems. Cover design by Susanne Van Duyne (Trade Design Group).

Several techniques have been developed in the literature for processing different aspects of the geometry of shapes, for representing and manipulating a shape at different levels of detail, and for describing a shape at a structural level as a concise, part-based, or iconic model. Such techniques are used in many different contexts, such as industrial design, biomedical applications, entertainment, environmental monitoring, or cultural heritage. This book covers a variety of topics related to preserving and enhancing shape information at a geometric level, and to effectively capturing the structure of a shape by identifying relevant shape components and their mutual relationships.

The book reflects the state of the art in important areas of speech and audio signal processing. It presents topics which are missed so far and most recent findings in the field. Leading international experts report on their field of work and their new results. Considerable amount of space is covered by multi-microphone systems, specific approaches for noise reduction, and evaluations of speech signals and speech processing systems. Multi-microphone systems include automatic calibration of microphones, localisation of sound sources, and source separation procedures. Also covered are recent approaches to the problem of adaptive echo and noise suppression. A novel solution allows the design of filter banks exhibiting bands spaced according to the Bark scale und especially short delay times. Furthermore, a method for engine noise reduction and proposals for improving the signal/noise ratio based on partial signal reconstruction or using a noise reference are reported. A number of contributions deal with speech quality. Besides basic considerations for quality evaluation specific methods for bandwidth extension of telephone speech are described. Procedures to reduce the reverberation of audio signals can help to increase speech intelligibility and speech recognition rates. In addition, solutions for specific applications in speech and audio signal processing are reported including, e.g., the enhancement of audio signal reproduction in automobiles and the automatic evaluation of hands-free systems and hearing aids.

This book provides the material for an introductory course in engineering acoustics for students with basic knowledge in mathematics. It is based on extensive teaching experience at the university level. Under the guidance of an academic teacher it is sufficient as the sole textbook for the subject. Each chapter deals with a well defined topic and represents the material for a two-hour lecture. The 15 chapters alternate between more theoretical and more application-oriented concepts. They cover the following issues: Introduction - Mechanic and acoustic oscillators - Electromechanic and electroacoustic oscillations - Electromechanic and electroacoustic analogies - Electromechanic and electroacoustic transduction - Magnetic-field transducers - Electric-field transducers - The wave equation in fluids - Horn and stepped ducts - Spherical sound sources and line arrays - Piston membranes, diffraction and scattering - Dissipation, reflection and absorption - Geometric acoustics and diffuse sound fields - Isolation of air- and structure-borne sound - Noise control: a survey - Appendices, e.g, complex notation for sinusoidal signals, power and intensity.

Microphone arrays have attracted a lot of interest in the last two decades. The reason behind this is that they have the potential to solve many important problems in both human-machine and human-human interfaces for different kinds of communications. But before microphone arrays can be deployed broadly, there is a strong need for a deep understanding of the problems encountered in the real world and their clear formulation in order that useful algorithms can be developed to process the sensor signals. While there are many manuscripts on antenna arrays from a narrowband perspective (narrowband signals and narrowband processing), the literature is quite scarce when it comes to sensor arrays explained from a truly broadband perspective. Many algorithms for speech applications were simply borrowed from narrowband antenna arrays. However, a direct application of narrowband ideas to broadband speech processing may not be necessarily appropriate and can lead to many misunderstandings. Therefore, the main objective of this book is to derive and explain the most fundamental algorithms from a strictly broadband (signals and/or processing) viewpoint. Thanks to the approach taken here, new concepts come in light that have the great potential of solving several, very difficult problems encountered in acoustic and speech applications. Microphone Array Signal Processing is a timely and important professional reference for researchers and practicing engineers from universities and a wide range of industries. It is also an excellent text for graduate students who are interested in this promising and exciting field.
