Abstract

'Het grote boerenboek' is een kennismaking met het leven op het platteland en met de mensen die er wonen, werken en recreëren. Alle landbouwproducten komen bij een boer vandaan: melk, kaas, vlees, graan, aardappelen, groenten en fruit. Ongeveer 7500 jaar geleden kwamen de eerste boeren naar ons land. Ze hielden enkele dieren en verbouwden graan en knollen. Langzaam groeide de bevolking. De bedrijven werden steeds groter en gebruikten steeds meer energie, bestrijdingsmiddelen en kunstmest om aan de groeiende vraag naar landbouwproducten te voldoen. In 'Het grote boerenboek' lees je dat het ook anders kan. Dat biologische landbouw beter is voor mensen en dieren. In korte hoofdstukken kom je alles te weten over kippen, varkens, koeien en schapen en het verbouwen van aardappels, groenten en fruit. Tussen de teksten vind je veel korte weetjes die de tekst verduidelijken of aanvullen. Ook staan er veel proefjes in 'Het grote boerenboek' voor thuis of op school. Je maakt je eigen biovergasser, een groentekas en een regenmeter. Je smult van zelfgemaakte champignonsnacks, versgebakken chips en zelfgemaakte kaas. Abstract

Sclerotinia is one of the most devastating and cosmopolitan soil borne plant pathogen that infects more than 500 species of plants worldwide including field crops, fruit crops, ornamentals, trees, shrubs and numerous weeds. Annual yield losses due to Sclerotinia diseases exceed over millions of dollars each year world over. Extensive crop damage, lack of high levels of host resistance and the general difficulty of managing diseases caused by Sclerotinia have been the impetus for sustainable research on this pathogen. The present book on Sclerotinia deals with the aspects on taxonomy, nomenclature, geographical distribution, economic importance, host range, the diseases caused, symptomatology, disease assessment, reproduction, ultra-structures, pathogenic variability, perpetuation, infection and pathogenesis, biochemical, molecular and physiological aspects of host pathogen interaction, seed infection, disease cycle, epidemiology and forecasting, host resistance and disease management strategies. In addition, laboratory and field techniques developed so far for Sclerotinia have been included. Abstract

This book is the self-contained final volume of a comprehensive seven-volume series covering the basic and applied science relating to nitrogen fixation. It addresses the most important nitrogen-fixing symbiosis of all - that between legumes and their root-nodule bacteria - and therefore deals with the properties and behaviour of both macro- and micro-symbiont. The coverage is comprehensive, beginning with the extent of the symbiosis and how it may have arisen in the geological past. It considers how legumes select the root-nodule bacteria they allow to form nodules on their roots and the intricate series of signals to be exchanged between legume and bacteria for infection to occur. The immense progress in understanding the genetic systems in the bacteria necessary for nodulation is now being replicated in a rapidly increasing understanding of the required systems in the legumes. The cell biology of the processes of both infection and nodule development is analysed and leads to a parallel assessment of the biochemical processes in carbon and nitrogen metabolism required for successful nitroogen fixation by the symbiotic bacteroid. Attention is given to the ways in which the nodule has solved the conundrum of providing enough O2 for energy generation to drive nitrogen fixation without either inactivating the O2-sensitive nitrogenase or creating damaging reactive oxygen species. This volume also covers the basic physiology of the variety of root-nodule bacteria infecting legumes, as well as looking at the renewed controversy about the chemical form(s) of nitrogen exported to the legume. Successful exploitation of the legume symbiosis in agriculture, horticulture, and forestry demands an understanding of the ecology of the root-nodule bacteria - particularly what makes for a successful inoculant strain for legume introduction to agricultural systems. Then, there is a requirement for inoculation technology to both successfully deliver viable bacteria to the root surface and facilitate nodulation. These practical aspects are thoroughly covered in this volume, with a final chapter assessing how the massive amount of recent information can be exploited in matching host and microsymbiont for the wide variety of environments in which they are needed in our production systems.

Over the last thirty years, China has developed one of the world's largest public research programs in agricultural biotechnology. Building on a long tradition of agricultural advances, Chinese scientists have applied biotechnology techniques to develop hundreds of novel crop varieties suited to local farming conditions and challenges. Agricultural Biotechnology in China: Origins and Prospects is a comprehensive examination of how the origins of biotechnology research agendas, along with the effectiveness of the seed delivery system and biosafety oversight, help to explain current patterns of crop development and adoption in China. Based on firsthand insights from China's laboratories and farms, Valerie Karplus and Dr. Xing Wang Deng explore the implications of China's investment for the nation's rural development, environmental footprint, as well as its global scientific and economic competitiveness. About the Authors Valerie J. Karplus graduated from Yale University in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry and Political Science. She lived in China for two years, where she researched the development and impact of agricultural biotechnology in China while based at the China Agricultural University (2002-2003) and National Institute of Biological Sciences, Beijing (2005-2006). Currently she is pursuing graduate study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Xing Wang Deng is the Daniel C. Eaton Professor of Plant Biology at Yale University. His scientific work focuses on the molecular and genomic basis for plant development and agricultural biotechnology. He also serves as the co-director of the National Institute of Biological Sciences, Beijing and the founding director of the Peking-Yale Joint Research Center of Plant Molecular Genetics and Agro-biotechnology. He leads a research team that has published well over a hundred peer-reviewed articles in his area of research.
