Abstract

Vassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) est considéré comme l'un des plus grands artistes européen du XXe siècle. Profondément inspiré par la culture et le folklore russe, son pays d'origine, il part pour l'Allemagne où, naturalisé, il rejoint les fondateurs du Bauhaus pour enseigner l'art pictural. À l'arrivée des Nazis, il s'exile enfin vers la France où il termine sa vie. Prenant pour date charnière l'année 1921, lorsque Kandinsky quitte définitivement Moscou en s'interdisant toute possibilité d'y revenir, la rétrospective du Centre Pompidou, qui possède le fonds Kandinsky le plus documenté au monde, s'attache particulièrement à reconstituer cette trajectoire européenne, à l'occasion de la plus complète des rétrospectives tentée depuis 40 ans. En association avec la Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus de Munich et le Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum de New York, auxquels se sont joints les Musées russes et d'importantes collections privées, l'exposition réunit 90 toiles fondamentales au format imposant. Le catalogue reproduit en outre une cinquantaine de documents inédits (aquarelles, gouaches et dessins), légués au Centre Pompidou par sa dernière femme, Nina Kandinsky.
