Au cours de ces dernières décennies, la notion de souffrance s'est diffusée de manière croissante dans de nombreuses institutions comme dans la recherche en sciences humaines. Saisie en termes de trouble, fragilité, vulnérabilité... elle sert à nommer l'inacceptable et l'injuste, au risque de rendre l'individu responsable de ce qui autrefois relevait des structures sociales ou des violences institutionnelles. Dans le travail de la critique sociale, elle semble remplacer les vieux termes d'exploitation ou d'aliénation. Quel est l'enjeu de nommer de la sorte le négatif de l'existence ? Quelles sont les incidences sur les moyens de riposte dont il est possible de se saisir ? Après avoir interrogé de manière approfondie la catégorie souffrance pour en saisir les enjeux, la portée et les limites, les auteurs se centrent sur différents lieux institutionnels où elle fait référence : ceux de l'intervention sociale, de la justice et du travail. Ce sont autant de terrains dans lesquels s'éprouvent les difficultés et les écueils d'une écoute « politisée » des souffrances sociales mais où s'inventent aussi des pratiques cliniques ou des démarches collectives inédites.
