Quasi–Monte Carlo methods have become an increasingly popular alternative to Monte Carlo methods over the last two decades. Their successful implementation on practical problems, especially in finance, has motivated the development of several new research areas within this field to which practitioners and researchers from various disciplines currently contribute. This book presents essential tools for using quasi–Monte Carlo sampling in practice. The first part of the book focuses on issues related to Monte Carlo methods—uniform and non-uniform random number generation, variance reduction techniques—but the material is presented to prepare the readers for the next step, which is to replace the random sampling inherent to Monte Carlo by quasi–random sampling. The second part of the book deals with this next step. Several aspects of quasi-Monte Carlo methods are covered, including constructions, randomizations, the use of ANOVA decompositions, and the concept of effective dimension. The third part of the book is devoted to applications in finance and more advanced statistical tools like Markov chain Monte Carlo and sequential Monte Carlo, with a discussion of their quasi–Monte Carlo counterpart. The prerequisites for reading this book are a basic knowledge of statistics and enough mathematical maturity to follow through the various techniques used throughout the book. This text is aimed at graduate students in statistics, management science, operations research, engineering, and applied mathematics. Christiane Lemieux is an Associate Professor and the Associate Chair for Actuarial Science in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Waterloo in Canada. State space models have gained tremendous popularity in recent years in as disparate fields as engineering, economics, genetics and ecology. After a detailed introduction to general state space models, this book focuses on dynamic linear models, emphasizing their Bayesian analysis. Whenever possible it is shown how to compute estimates and forecasts in closed form; for more complex models, simulation techniques are used. A final chapter covers modern sequential Monte Carlo algorithms. The book illustrates all the fundamental steps needed to use dynamic linear models in practice, using R. Many detailed examples based on real data sets are provided to show how to set up a specific model, estimate its parameters, and use it for forecasting. All the code used in the book is available online. No prior knowledge of Bayesian statistics or time series analysis is required, although familiarity with basic statistics and R is assumed. Giovanni Petris is Associate Professor at the University of Arkansas. He has published many articles on time series analysis, Bayesian methods, and Monte Carlo techniques, and has served on National Science Foundation review panels. He regularly teaches courses on time series analysis at various universities in the US and in Italy. An active participant on the R mailing lists, he has developed and maintains a couple of contributed packages. Sonia Petrone is Associate Professor of Statistics at Bocconi University,Milano. She has published research papers in top journals in the areas of Bayesian inference, Bayesian nonparametrics, and latent variables models. She is interested in Bayesian nonparametric methods for dynamic systems and state space models and is an active member of the International Society of Bayesian Analysis. Patrizia Campagnoli received her PhD in Mathematical Statistics from the University of Pavia in 2002. She was Assistant Professor at the University of Milano-Bicocca and currently works for a financial software company.

This monograph presents a concise discussion of the dynamics of mechanical randomizers (coin tossing, die throw and roulette). The authors derive the equations of motion, also describing collisions and body contacts. It is shown and emphasized that, from the dynamical point of view, outcomes are predictable, i.e. if an experienced player can reproduce initial conditions with a small finite uncertainty, there is a good chance that the desired final state will be obtained. Finally, readers learn why mechanical randomizers can approximate random processes and benefit from a discussion of the nature of randomness in mechanical systems. In summary, the book not only provides a general analysis of random effects in mechanical (engineering) systems, but addresses deep questions concerning the nature of randomness, and gives potentially useful tips for gamblers and the gaming industry.
