Progressives have been using divide-and-conquer tactics stolen from conservatives to further their own cause with limited success. This is because such tactics go against everything progressives believe in, and there is no logic or power in trying to use bad strategies to get to a good place. Legislator Krysten Sinema shows how the future of the progressive movement is to be found in unity, alignment and partnership and moving away from being entrenched in identity politics and sub-agendas.

How should politicians act? When should they try to lead public opinion and when should they follow it? Should politicians see themselves as experts, whose opinions have greater authority than other people's, or as participants in a common dialogue with ordinary citizens? When do virtues like toleration and willingness to compromise deteriorate into moral weakness? In this innovative work, Andrew Sabl answers these questions by exploring what a democratic polity needs from its leaders. He concludes that there are systematic, principled reasons for the holders of divergent political offices or roles to act differently. Sabl argues that the morally committed civil rights activist, the elected representative pursuing legislative results, and the grassroots organizer determined to empower ordinary citizens all have crucial democratic functions. But they are different functions, calling for different practices and different qualities of political character. To make this case, he draws on political theory, moral philosophy, leadership studies, and biographical examples ranging from Everett Dirksen to Ella Baker, Frances Willard to Stokely Carmichael, Martin Luther King Jr. to Joe McCarthy. Ruling Passions asks democratic theorists to pay more attention to the "governing pluralism" that characterizes a diverse, complex democracy. It challenges moral philosophy to adapt its prescriptions to the real requirements of democratic life, to pay more attention to the virtues of political compromise and the varieties of human character. And it calls on all democratic citizens to appreciate "democratic constancy": the limited yet serious standard of ethical character to which imperfect democratic citizens may rightly hold their leaders--and themselves.

Ce livre s'attache à raconter par qui et comment l'autorité a été exercée dans une commune rurale au cours des deux derniers siècles et jusqu'à nos jours. Il montre les événements qu'un village – Rioz, dans l'Est de la France – a vécus ; indique le rôle de décisions prises par une autorité royale, impériale ou républicaine ; décrit la manière dont de multiples problèmes ont été résolus, tant bien que mal, par le maire et son conseil municipal : en bref, comment se gouverne un village, au fil de l'histoire locale, régionale et nationale. Ainsi se dessine la chronique colorée d'une petite collectivité qui, ayant à affronter des difficultés très diverses, y a réagi, entre désarroi et vaillance, résignation et énergie. L'originalité de cet ouvrage est patente. L'histoire de l'exercice du pouvoir à la tête de l'État est, depuis longtemps, le sujet de travaux innombrables. Les histoires de villes comportent des indications sur leur administration. Celles de villages sont nombreuses, mais elles ne traitent guère que des modes de vie de leurs habitants dans le passé ou de la succession de leurs seigneurs. Pour la première fois on raconte ici quelle a été la pratique du pouvoir dans un village. Pour composer ce livre, Jean-Marcel Jeanneney, maire de Rioz de 1967 à 1989, a, disposé de tous les registres des délibérations du conseil municipal depuis le Consulat. D'autres documents lui ont permis de remonter jusqu'à la Révolution et quelque peu au delà.
