Despite major advances in the treatment of HIV, there are still many areas requiring additional study. These areas include ways to create efficacious, potent antiretrovirals for suppressing viral loads completely without toxic side effects, the definition of unknown drug targets while fine-tuning known targets, and the ability to better understand the interplay between viral and host factors. In HIV Protocols, Second Edition, expert researchers provide clear, state-of-the-art methods for the study of HIV. Directed toward three specific goals, this text aims to document up-to-date protocols for select aspects of HIV biology, to bring together both virological and immunological approaches in a single, convenient volume, and to present a comprehensive account of a range of techniques not available in any existing HIV protocol book. As a volume in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology™ series, the chapters include brief introductions to the subject, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and Notes sections containing priceless tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Comprehensive and cutting-edge, HIV Protocols, Second Edition is an ideal guide to the wide array of techniques used in fundamental or applied research into the biology and pathogenesis of HIV-1.

Surgical Pathology of the Gastrointestinal System: Bacterial, Fungal, Viral, and Parasitic Infections provides a unique diagnostic reference text for the pathologic diagnosis of infectious diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Written for the practicing surgical pathologist, this text combines the superior illustrations of an atlas with carefully written prose to create a useful diagnostic companion. The text is divided into four sections covering bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitic infections of the gastrointestinal tract. The descriptive sections of each chapter are organized into short paragraphs for easy reference and include the use of tables to compare and contrast organisms and summarize differential diagnoses. Each chapter is extensively illustrated, and contains prose discussions of diagnostic features, differential diagnoses, brief clinical descriptions, and ancillary tests that help confirm the diagnosis (i.e. immunohistochemistry, special histochemical stains, and molecular diagnostic techniques). Surgical Pathology of the Gastrointestinal System: Bacterial, Fungal, Viral, and Parasitic Infections provides pertinent clinical, diagnostic, and epidemiologic information that will be valuable to the practicing surgical pathologist. This volume will also help surgical pathologists gain familiarity with other contributory laboratory tests that are available to help confirm diagnosis.

The volumes included in Antimicrobial Drug Resistance represent the first comprehensive, multidisciplinary reference covering the area of antimicrobial drug resistance in bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites from basic science, clinical, and epidemiological perspectives. The first volume, Antimicrobial Drug Resistance, Mechanisms of Drug Resistance, is dedicated to the biological basis of drug resistance and effective avenues for drug development. With the emergence of more drug-resistant strains, the approach to dealing with the drug resistance problem must include the research of different aspects of the mechanisms of bacterial resistance and the dissemination of resistance genes as well as research utilizing new genomic information. These approaches will permit the design of novel strategies to develop new antibiotics and preserve the effectiveness of currently available ones. The second volume, Antimicrobial Drug Resistance, Clinical and Epidemiological Aspects, is devoted to the clinical aspects of drug resistance. Although there is evidence that restricted use of a specific antibiotic can be followed by a decrease in drug resistance to that agent, drug resistance control is not easily achieved. Thus, the infectious disease physician requires input from the clinical microbiologist and infection control specialist to make informed choices for the effective treatment of various strains of drug-resistant pathogens in individual patients. This 2-volume set is an important reference for students in microbiology, infectious disease physicians, medical students, basic scientists, drug development researchers, microbiologists, epidemiologists, and public health practitioners.

Sepsis is a very important public health problem. It is widely acknowledged that the severe inflammatory response syndrome/severe sepsis paradigm fails to stratify sepsis patients adequately. This book reviews in detail how sepsis should be managed on the basis of a novel approach to staging. The PIRO (predisposing factors, infection, response, organ dysfunction) model was first proposed at the start of the decade on a theoretical basis and has now been translated into a practical approach for use at the bedside. It is loosely based on the TNM staging system for cancers, with points being allocated to each of the four aforementioned key characteristics of the septic process. The proposed PIRO framework facilitates evaluation of factors that are important in the pathogenesis of severe sepsis and in the development of treatment strategies. This book clearly explains the advantages of the PIRO approach in different settings and will be of value to all practitioners concerned with the management of sepsis.

Because aging is accompanied by a steady decline in resistance to infectious diseases, the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases in the elderly is not only much more complex, but also often quite different from that for younger patients. In Infectious Disease in the Aging: A Clinical Handbook, 2nd Edition, a panel of well-known and highly experienced geriatric physicians and infectious disease experts review the most important common infections affecting the elderly and delineate their well-proven diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventative techniques. Among the illnesses discusses are urinary tract infections, pneumonia, ocular infections, tuberculosis, and fungal and viral infections. There are detailed discussion of sepsis, infective endocarditis, intraabdominal infections, bacterial meningitis, osteomyelitis and septic arthritis, and prosthetic device infections. In addition, this 2nd edition includes new chapters on Herpes zoster, HIV/AIDS, and SARS and West Nile Virus. Comprehensive, informative, and easily accessible, Infectious Disease in the Aging: A Clinical Handbook, 2nd Edition, offers all physicians treating geriatric patients the quickest and most up-to-date guide to understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious disease problems in the elderly today.
