Dans l'histoire complexe de Venise, le Seicento - le XVIIe siècle- n'est pas un siècle comme les autres : il a offert à la République la toute dernière occasion de réagir, y compris par les arts, à l'inéluctable destin qui l'a reléguée dans un rôle de plus en plus marginal par rapport aux événements politiques européens. C'est une période bien particulière, soucieuse de marquer visuellement le tissu de la ville par les signes majestueux du triomphe. Le Seicento vénitien qui confond augures, rêves et illusions avec la réalité concrète, politique ou sociale, a eu pour mots d'ordre l'excès et l'emphase. Un goût certain pour la profusion ornementale, le grotesque et le bizarre. Un désir effréné de " croître en grandeur ". L'intention était claire : il s'agissait de susciter l'émerveillement. Et pour ce faire, la ville s'est mise en scène. L'étonnante " représentation théâtrale " qui se déploie ainsi à l'intérieur mais aussi à l'extérieur des édifices finit par se diffuser dans tout Venise. Le baroque qui s'y décline est étroitement lié à la nature même de la ville, " fondée sur l'impossible ", et à l'eau bien sûr, sa consistance si spécifique. Au fil des ans, la vocation se tarit, l'élan triomphant s'épuise mais vers la fin du le XVIIe siècle et à l'aube du siècle suivant, on voit s'insinuer au côté du baroque un registre différent, plus détendu, dicté par l'esthétique naissante, le rococo, qui abandonne la fastueuse symétrie du baroque pour se tourner vers les petites choses et l'éphémère des sens, l'intime et l'impalpable. C'est dans ce contexte que la République, ayant abandonné tout désir de puissance, s'est refermée sur une magnifique et imperturbable neutralité qui lui sera bientôt fatale.

Moslims kunnen hun vijf dagelijkse gebeden overal uitvoeren. Toch gingen Gentse moslims al kort na hun aankomst in de jaren 1960 op zoek naar een gezamenlijke gebedsruimte. In de diaspora betekenen moskeeën dan ook zoveel meer dan in de islamitische landen van herkomst. Ze evolueerden van ontmoetingsplaatsen in den vreemde tot multifunctionele centra ingebed in het stedelijke weefsel. Toch blijven deze 'schuilmoskeeën' voor de doorsnee Vlaming onzichtbaar in het stadsbeeld. Ze zien er immers niet uit als typische moskeeën met koepels en minaretten. Het zijn veeleer omgebouwde rijhuizen of panden die oorspronkelijk een andere bestemming hadden. Dat zegt ook veel over de positie van de moslims die niet over de mogelijkheden beschikten om nieuwbouwmoskeeën op te trekken. Daar komt stilaan verandering in. In de beginjaren van de moslimaanwezigheid in Europa en het Westen was de oprichting van een islamitische ruimte voornamelijk gericht op de eigen groep. Later werd zelfvertegenwoordiging ten opzichte van de buitenwereld alsmaar belangrijker. Terwijl moskeeën vroeger de moslims als het ware verborgen achter hun gevels, zijn ze vandaag de manier bij uitstek om zich te tonen. Dit boek van Meryem Kanmaz schetst de totstandkoming van de Gentse moskeeën en gebedsruimtes van de jaren 1960 tot 2009

The British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944) designed 140 cemeteries in the countryside of Flanders and northern France for soldiers killed in the First World War. The cemeteries can be regarded as an imprint of the former battlefront on the map of Europe. All were designed according to principles established beforehand, based on the idea of a cathedral, church or chapel in the open air, and include uniform gravestones, a War Stone and a Cross of Sacrifice. Yet the difference in size, alignment and provenance make them all unique variations on the themes in question. The most memorable aspects are their meticulously chosen position in the landscape, the varied selection of trees and other greenery, and the architecture of the entrance and shelter buildings. In an exhaustive landscape-architectural analysis, this opulently illustrated book charts the history of the designs and reveals the underlying principle of order and variation in the architecture. All 140 cemeteries are fully documented with references to the places where they are to be found.
