By all accounts, Jane Austen seems to have lived a quiet, circumscribed life. The daughter of a Hampshire clergyman, she never married and rarely ventured outside the close-knit circle of her family and friends. But while her life may have been uneventful, her novels reveal a keen wit, an acute eye for social foibles, and a masterful prose style. Never out of print, her six novels have attracted a legion of enthusiastic fans and spawned multiple unofficial sequels and prequels as well as television and film adaptations. This title is divided into four sections: 1. Career, Life, and Influence - Original essays offer readers an introduction to Austen by explicating the culture and time period during which Austen wrote her classic novels and the long history of Austen criticism. 2. Critical Contexts - Austen's critical contexts are considered through a series of wide ranging overviews of her life and works. 3. Critical Readings - This main section of the book provides a sample of critical close readings from a number of schools of thought. Each essay is 2,500-5,000 words in length, and all essays conclude with a list of "works Cited" along with endnotes. Essays are reprinted here to deepen readers' understanding of Austen and strengthen their engagement with the critical concerns surrounding her and her work. 4. Resources - The volume's appendices offer a section of useful reference resources: A chronology of the author's life; A complete list of the author's works and their original dates of publication; A general bibliography; A detailed paragraph on the volume's editor; Notes on the individual chapter authors; and A subject index.

"L’histoire des éditions françaises de Jane Austen, depuis 1815, apporte un éclairage essentiel sur la réception de l’écrivain en France. En effet, bien que ses six romans (Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey, Emma, Mansfield Park, Persuasion) aient été publiés très tôt en français et n’aient presque jamais cessé de l’être, il existe un grand décalage entre sa renommée en France et en Grande-Bretagne, où elle est considérée comme l’un des plus grands écrivains britanniques.De ce côté-ci de la Manche, elle est plutôt présentée comme une romancière “sentimentale”, par conséquent appréciée avant tout par le lectorat féminin, ce qui peut s’expliquer par la médiocre qualité des éditions françaises publiées aux XIXe et XXe siècles. Bien que nombreuses, surtout dans les trente dernières années, ces traductions offrent en effet une image déformée de l’œuvre de Jane Austen. Pourquoi et par qui a-t-elle été traduite ? Quand, et à l’initiative de quels éditeurs ? Le présent ouvrage donne à voir la qualité des traductions, mais il resitue avant tout les éditions françaises dans un contexte historique et littéraire.Il met en lumière les raisons pour lesquelles Jane Austen fut éditée, à côté de quels autres auteurs, dans quelles collections, et surtout pour quel public. Ainsi peut-on cerner l’image de la romancière dessinée par le monde de l’édition français, à destination de ses lecteurs. When James Edward Austen-Leigh's Memoir of his famous aunt was published in 1870, far from satisfying public curiosity about Jane Austen as the family had intended, it simply raised a series of new questions, particularly about Jane Austen's unpublished work, which had been mentioned only in passing. Austen Leigh was persuaded to issue a much-expanded second edition in 1871. Here he included for the first time the complete texts of Jane Austen's novel in letters, Lady Susan, and the fragmentary novel The Watsons, as well as a brief summary of her last unfinished work, later known as Sanditon. At the same time he took the opportunity to revise the biographical sections of the Memoir partly to include new information that had come to light since the first edition, so that all in all the second edition has a significance for Austen scholars quite separate from the first.
