Abstract

Fluid-structure and pedestrian-structure interaction phenomena are extremely important for non-conventional bridges. The results presented in this volume concern: simplified formulas for flutter assessment; innovative structural solutions to increase the aeroelastic stability of long-span bridges; numerical simulations of the flow around a benchmark rectangular cylinder; examples of designs of large structures assisted by wind-tunnel tests; analytical, computational and experimental investigation of the synchronisation mechanisms between pedestrians and footbridge structures. The present book is addressed to a wide audience including professionals, doctoral students and researchers, aiming to increase their know-how in the field of wind engineering, bluff-body aerodynamics and bridge dynamics.

Abstract

Smart homes are intelligent environments that interact dynamically and respond readily in an adaptive manner to the needs of the occupants and changes in the ambient conditions. The realization of systems that support the smart homes concept requires integration of technologies from different fields. Among the challenges that the designers face is to make all the components of the system interact in a seamless, reliable and secure manner. Another major challenge is to design the smart home in a way that takes into account the way humans live and interact. This later aspect requires input from the humanities and social sciences fields. The need for input from diverse fields of knowledge reflects the multidisciplinary nature of the research and development effort required to realize smart homes that are acceptable to the general public. The applications that can be supported by a smart home are very wide and their degree of sophistication depends on the underlying technology used. Some of the application areas include monitoring and control of appliances, security, telemedicine, entertainment, location based services, care for children and the elderly… etc. This book consists of eleven chapters that cover various aspects of smart home systems.

Abstract

Textiles, polymers and composites are increasingly being utilised within the building industry. This pioneering text provides a concise and representative overview of the opportunities available for textile, polymer and composite fibres to be used in construction and architecture. The first set of chapters examine the main types and properties of textiles, polymers and composites used in buildings. Key topics include the types and production of textiles, the use of polymer foils and fibre reinforced polymer composites as well as textiles and coatings for tensioned membrane structures. T

Abstract

Prepared by the Task Committee on Blast-Resistant Design of the Petrochemical Committee of the Energy Division of ASCE. This report provides general guidelines for the structural design of blast-resistant petrochemical facilities, updating the 1997 original edition. Information is provided regarding U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements, design objectives, siting considerations, and load determination. References cite sources of detailed information. Detailed coverage is included for types of construction, dynamic material strengths, allowable response criteria, analysis methods, and design procedures. Typical details and ancillary considerations, such as doors and windows, are also included. A how-to discussion on the upgrade of existing buildings is provided for older facilities which may not meet current needs. Three example calculations are included to illustrate design procedures. This report will be of interest to structural and petrochemical engineers involved in the design and construction of petrochemical facilities.

Abstract

This Standard outlines the important mechanical and structural engineering considerations for stacks where the primary supporting shell is made of FRP. Topics include: considerations pertaining to wind and seismic-induced vibrations; guidelines for the ultraviolet protection and selection of materials; requirements for lighting and lightning protection based upon existing building and federal codes; requirements for climbing and access based upon current Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards; the important areas regarding fabrication and construction; and maintenance and inspection following initial operation.

Abstract

Sponsored by the Sustainability Committee of the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE. This report presents guidelines that are intended to advance the understanding of sustainability in the structural community and to incorporate concepts of sustainability into structural engineering standards and practices. The guidelines are organized into five sections: Sustainable Design and Construction, Sustainable Strategies, Building Materials, Infrastructure, and Case Studies. Although many of the subjects are related, each section—and the related subsections—have been written to stand alone, allowing this report to be used as a practical reference. Infrastructure gets particular attention because many of the concepts and ideas in this guide that relate to infrastructure can also be applied to design and construction. This report was written for structural engineers, but related disciplines will also benefit from the contents. This book will help structural engineers as they meet the challenge to design and construct a sustainable built environment
