Abstract

Abstract

“Only once in a great while does a book come along that really does the job in addressing a major medical issue. When this happens, all can be joyful… Readers will find ALL their favorite dietary puzzlements dealt with… With consummate scholarship, clarity and brevity, Truswell sifts out the chaff and identifies the critical questions, the responsible investigators, and the key studies.” So says Emeritus Professor Henry Blackburn from the University of Minnesota in the foreword to this remarkable concise book on the history of research on diet and heart disease. This was a theme of scientific, medical and public interest in the 20th Century, a century marked by the rise and fall of coronary heart disease as the major cause of death in the first world, followed by the rise of this cause of death in the developing world. There is obviously much to learn, and this book is an excellent starting point, tracing dietary factors and their role in heart disease one by one: fats, sugar, salt, alcohol, coffee, trans-fats, etc. Without an understanding of the role of diet and the changes that have been seen in the North American and NW European diet, the story of the decline in the heart disease death rate may have been very different.

Abstract

Chronological aging takes a toll on all and is especially visible on the most recognizable features of our facial skin. As the population ages it is demanding more help, including prevention of skin problems. We live in a world between expectation and reality, and the goal for dermatologists is to help ourselves and our patients anticipate problems and provide solutions. Preventative Dermatology is the first book fully dedicated to prevention of skin disease. It seems almost counter-intuitive to take on this task, because so much of what we do in dermatology is based on repair and restructuring of skin maladies. However, the shortage of dermatology providers and the shift to cosmetics and procedures mean that it is essential to give patients choice when deciding the best options for themselves and their therapy and to maximize their experience of receiving the best quality healthcare. Much can be done to prevent the disfiguring effects brought on by the abuse of sun, nicotine and alcohol, excess weight, mobility and exercise difficulties, dysfunctional nutrition, improper hygiene, lack of immunizations, inadequate cosmetic repair, and many other problems. Preventive dermatology focuses on ways we can minimize skin problems. We have highly effective sunscreens, a plethora of various information about skin care on the internet, and more prevention and treatment modalities than ever before. However, even the most informed patients need guidance, making this book essential for all practicing dermatologists.

Abstract

Abstract

Recounting the social, cultural, and scientific history of vaccines, Vaccines: A Biography traces the lineage—the ‘biography’—of individual vaccines, originating with deeply rooted medical problems, following ideas as they are conceived and developed, leading eventually to practical, preventive solutions to major public health problems in society. Yet these are not ‘biographies’ in the traditional sense; they do not trace an individual’s growth and development. These are epic stories of discovery, of risk-takers. They have all the trappings of fiction: strong protagonists who succeed against sometimes great odds, interpersonal conflicts, deceit, political intrigue, ethical dilemmas, and dramatic, if not staged events. They are set in the major centers of Europe and the United States, on farms and in slums, and in exotic venues from Calcutta to French Indochina to Cairo to Panama. They occur in the halls of academia, research laboratories, the chambers of government, and on the battlefields of war. At its core, Vaccine: A Biography is the history of individuals advancing medical science, in the words of the famous physical scientist Isaac Newton, "by standing on the shoulders of giants".

Abstract

The renin angiotensin system plays an essential role on cardiac and vascular functions and their connection in the generation of cardiovascular diseases. Renin Angiotensin System and Cardiovascular Disease covers indispensable aspects such as intracellular signaling, regulation of cell volume in the failing heart, the presence of an intracrine renin angiotensin system, and the influence of prorenin/renin, angiotensin II, angiotensin (1-7) and aldosterone. Furthermore, the role of the mineralocorticoid receptor as an imperative component of the intracrine renin angiotensin system and as a regulator of extracellular action of angiotensin II is described, reinforcing the view that aldosterone inhibitors are helpful in the treatment of heart failure and hypertension. Renin Angiotensin System and Cardiovascular Disease provides readers with an outstanding review of the major topics involving the renin angiotensin system and cardiovascular disease. With contributions by an international panel of experts, Renin Angiotensin System and Cardiovascular Disease presents the most relevant aspects of the role of the renin angiotensin aldosterone system on cardiovascular diseases including hypertension, congestive heart failure, atherosclerosis and diabetes. The volume Editors, Dr. Walmor C. DeMello and Dr. Edward Frohlich, both established specialists in their respective fields, team up to discuss a range of topics from Renin Angiotensin Aldosterone System and Pathobiology of Hypertension to Inhibiting the Renin Angiotensin Aldosterone System in Patients with Heart Failure and Myocardial Infarction.

Abstract

"The mhGAP-IG has been developed through an intensive process of evidence review. Systematic reviews were conducted to develop evidence-based recommendations. The process involved a WHO Guideline Development Group of international experts, who collaborated closely with the WHO Secretariat. The recommendations were then converted into clearly presented stepwise interventions, again with the collaboration of an international group of experts. The mhGAP-IG was then circulated among a wider range of reviewers across the world to include all the diverse contributions. The mhGAP-IG is based on the mhGAP Guidelines on interventions for mental, neurological and substance use disorders. The mhGAP Guidelines and the mhGAP-IG will be reviewed and updated in 5 years. Any revision and update before that will be made to the online version of the document. The mhGAP-IG has been developed for use in non-specialized health-care settings. It is aimed at health-care providers working at first- and second-level facilities. These health-care providers may be working in a health centre or as part of the clinical team at a district-level hospital or clinic. They include general physicians, family physicians, nurses and clinical officers. Other non-specialist health-care providers can use the mhGAP-IG with necessary adaptation. The first-level facilities include the health-care centres that serve as first point of contact with a health professional and provide outpatient medical and nursing care. Services are provided by general practitioners or physicians, dentists, clinical officers, community nurses, pharmacists and midwives, among others. Second-level facilities include the hospital at the first referral level responsible for a district or a defined geographical area containing a defined population and governed by a politico-administrative organization, such as a district health management team. The district clinician or mental health specialist supports the firstlevel health-care team for mentoring and referral. The mhGAP-IG is brief so as to facilitate interventions by busy non-specialists in low- and middle-income countries. It describes in detail what to do but does not go into descriptions of how to do. It is important that the non-specialist health-care providers are trained and then supervised and supported in using the mhGAP-IG in assessing and managing people with mental, neurological and substance use disorders." - p. 2

Abstract

Evidence-based nutritional interventions are now a critical component of preventive medicine, employed in a wide variety of medical scenarios. Preventive Nutrition: A Comprehensive Guide for Health Professionals, Fourth Edition gives health professionals up-to-date, comprehensive reviews that evaluate the dietary practices and interventions that have been shown to reduce disease risk and improve health outcomes. This is the flagship volume for the book series, Nutrition and Health, which has become an essential tool for health professionals. As the state of global health and nutrition have changed much since the publication of the Third Edition, this major revised and expanded Fourth Edition includes newly authored chapters and features analysis of the results of the Women’s Health Initiative, the largest intervention study ever undertaken and completed in postmenopausal women. Other new material includes chapters reviewing the evidence concerning econutrition, micronutrients and major cancers, and cognitive function and other mental health areas. Also discussed are the importance of gastric acid secretions, the nutritional effects of current therapies, and the latest information on the biology of obesity and its relationship to Type 2 diabetes. One key new feature of this edition is a chapter on behavioral strategies to help assure compliance with dietary regimes, maximizing the health benefits of preventive nutrition. The authors have created the most comprehensive and up-to-date review of the nutritional strategies available for the prevention of disease and the promotion of health through nutrition. Patients are looking for credible information from their health care providers about a whole range of subjects covered here, including ß-carotene, lycopene, antioxidants, folate, and the myriad of bioactive phytochemicals found in garlic and other foods. With sections on cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and pregnancy among many others, this volume will be of great value to practicing health professionals, including physicians, nutritionists, dentists, pharmacists, dieticians, health educators, policy makers, health economists, regulatory agencies and research investigators. An entire section covers nutrition transitions around the world including Eastern Europe, Latin America and Asia as well as goals for preventive nutrition in developing countries.
