This book presents the results of a Japanese national research project carried out in 1988-1993, usually referred to as the New RC Project. Developing advanced reinforced concrete building structures with high strength and high quality materials under its auspices, the project aimed at promoting construction of highrise reinforced concrete buildings in highly seismic areas such as Japan. The project covered all the aspects of reinforced concrete structures, namely materials, structural elements, structural design, construction, and feasibility studies. In addition to presenting these results,

Enterprise Networks and Logistics for Agile Manufacturing presents a focused collection of quality chapters on state-of-the-art research efforts in the areas of enterprise networks and logistics, as well as their practical applications towards agile manufacturing. With the increasing decentralisation of manufacturing systems and outsourcing of processes, more robust and practical approaches and systems are needed to support agile manufacturing operations. Enterprise Networks and Logistics for Agile Manufacturing consists of two major sections: the first presents a broad-based review of the key areas of research in enterprise networks and logistics; the second focuses on an in-depth treatment of a particular methodology or system relevant to the book title. Examples include: • sustainable green supply chain; • value creation and supplier selection; • extended enterprise network management; • reverse logistics; and • innovative supply chain systems. The authors take into account the need to pose intellectual challenges while retaining a balanced approach in terms of scope versus depth and theory versus applications. Enterprise Networks and Logistics for Agile Manufacturing can be beneficial to academic researchers, practicing engineers and managers, and graduate students with an interest in any manufacturing sectors. It can enable them to better understand the present state and future trends of research in this important area, in order to position themselves strategically for future challenges as we enter the era of agile and distributed manufacturing.

Rapid Modelling and Quick Response is a proceedings volume of selected papers presented at the Second Rapid Modelling Conference “Quick Response – Intersection of Theory and Practice” presents new research developments, as well as business/teaching cases in the field of rapid modelling and quick response linked with performance improvements (based on lead time reduction, etc., as well as financial performance measures). This volume is a sequel to the First Rapid Modelling Conference proceedings volume that focused on rapid modelling for increasing competitiveness. The main focus of this second proceedings volume “Rapid Modelling and Quick Response – Intersection of Theory and Practice” is the transfer of knowledge from theory to practice, providing the theoretical foundations for successful performance improvement. Furthermore, illustrations will be given by teaching/business cases, as well as by success stories about new software tools in this field, and new approaches. The interested reader (researcher, as well as practitioner) will gain a good overview on new developments in this field. This conference volume is a must-have for innovative production managers, as well as for managers of service-providing processes. The theoretical, as well as the empirical/practical, pieces of work presented will change the mindset of the interested reader. Rapid Modelling and Quick Response will also contribute to the scientific communities of operations management, production management, supply chain management, industrial engineering and operations research. This volume and the presented research work, teaching/business cases, as well as software tools, can be also used for the education of students and executive managers. Rapid Modelling and Quick Response is supported by the SEVENTH FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME - THE PEOPLE PROGRAMME - Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways Project (No. 217891) “How revolutionary queuing based modelling software helps keeping jobs in Europe. The creation of a lead time reduction software that increases industry competitiveness and supports academic research.".

Enterprise networks offer a wide range of new business opportunities, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises that are usually more flexible than larger companies. In order to be successful, however, performances and expected benefits have to be carefully evaluated and balanced: enterprises must ensure they become a member of the right network for the right task and must find an efficient, flexible, and sustainable working practice. A promising approach to finding such a practice is to combine analytical methods and knowledge-based approaches, in a distributed context. Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques have been used to refine decision-making in networked enterprise processes, integrating people, information and products across the network boundaries. Artificial Intelligence Techniques for Networked Manufacturing Enterprises Management addresses prominent concepts and applications of AI technologies in the management of networked manufacturing enterprises. The aim of this book is to align latest practices, innovation and case studies with academic frameworks and theories, where AI techniques are used efficiently for networked manufacturing enterprises. More specifically, it includes the latest research results and projects at different levels addressing quick-response system, theoretical performance analysis, performance and capability demonstration. The role of emerging AI technologies in the modelling, evaluation and optimisation of networked enterprises’ activities at different decision levels is also covered. Artificial Intelligence Techniques for Networked Manufacturing Enterprises Management is a valuable guide for postgraduates and researchers in industrial engineering, computer science, automation and operations research. The Springer Series in Advanced Manufacturing publishes the best teaching and reference material to support students, educators and practitioners in manufacturing technology and management. This international series includes advanced textbooks, research monographs, edited works and conference proceedings covering all subjects in advanced manufacturing. The series focuses on new topics of interest, new treatments of more traditional areas and coverage of the applications of information and communication technology (ICT) in manufacturing.

The present economic and social environment has given rise to new situations within which companies must operate. As a first example, the globalization of the economy and the need for performance has led companies to outsource and then to operate inside networks of enterprises such as supply chains or virtual enterprises. A second instance is related to environmental issues. The statement about the impact of ind- trial activities on the environment has led companies to revise processes, to save - ergy, to optimize transportation.... A last example relates to knowledge. Knowledge is considered today to be one of the main assets of a company. How to capitalize, to manage, to reuse it for the benefit of the company is an important current issue. The three examples above have no direct links. However, each of them constitutes a challenge that companies have to face today. This book brings together the opinions of several leading researchers from all around the world. Together they try to develop new approaches and find answers to those challenges. Through the individual ch- ters of this book, the authors present their understanding of the different challenges, the concepts on which they are working, the approaches they are developing and the tools they propose. The book is composed of six parts; each one focuses on a specific theme and is subdivided into subtopics.
