In all settings of society, migration is an important factor for the development and growth of population. To understand its consequences, it is fundamental to know the quality of the available data, the measurement instruments for analyzing migration, and to have an appropriate demographic framework for studying the demographic effects of migration. Whereas the first section focuses on analysis, the second part deals with the different demographic behaviours of migrants compared to residents. Further it demonstrates the motives and explanations for migration. The final section analyzes geographic and economic aspects. The authors combine demographic analysis, interdisciplinary research, and international illustrations to explore current trends in migration patterns and processes. This book is valuable reading for an interdisciplinary academic audience as well as for regional planners and policy makers.

This book is one of the outputs of the conference on ˜Environmental Change, Forced Migration, and Social Vulnerability' (EFMSV) held in Bonn in October 2008. Migration is one of the oldest adaptation measures of humanity. Indeed, without migration the multitude of civilizations and interactions between them - peaceful and otherwise - would be hard to imagine. The United Nations (UN)-led global dialogue on migration is a clear sign that governments and the specialized UN agencies and bodies have recognized the need to view, govern, manage, and facilitate migration; to mitigate its negative effects; and to capitalize on the positive ones. It is a common expectation among experts that environmentally induced migration will further increase in the decades to come. Hence, next to the political, economic, ethnic, social, financial, humanitarian, and security aspects of migration, the environmental component should urgently be considered in the ongoing international dialogue on migration. This need is also a challenge. Without appropriate scientific knowledge, assessment, definitions, and classifications, the intergovernmental frameworks would not be able to deal with these complex phenomena. The Five-Pronged-Approach as formulated by the United Nations University (UNU) may serve as a framework to identify the additional dimensions of this challenge next to - and actually simultaneously with - the scientific one.

Lorna is een jonge Albanese vrouw die samen met haar vriend Sokol een eigen eethuisje wil openen in Luik. Daarvoor gaat ze in zee met Fabio, een misdadiger die haar betaalt om een schijnhuwelijk aan te gaan met de drugsverslaafde Claudy. Het plan is dat Lorna via het huwelijk de Belgische nationaliteit verkrijgt en dat Claudy daarna vermoord wordt. Daarna zou Lorna een nieuw schijnhuwelijk moeten aangaan met een Russische crimineel die ook de Belgische nationaliteit wil hebben. Tegen Claudy wordt gezegd dat een echtscheiding zal worden geregeld.Lorna wil echter liever een echtscheiding dan dat Claudy wordt vermoord, maar Fabio en de Rus zijn hier tegen want dit duurt langer en is verdachter. Om de scheiding te bespoedigen verwondt Lorna zichzelf waarna ze valse aangifte doet van mishandeling door Claudy. Fabio zegt akkoord te gaan met een scheiding, maar laat Claudy toch vermoorden omdat de Rus geen maand langer wil wachten. Lorna meent zwanger te zijn van Claudy en wil het kind houden. Volgens een arts is ze niet zwanger. De Rus vertrouwt haar niet meer, de overeenkomst ketst af. Lorna voelt aankomen dat Fabio haar gaat vermoorden wanneer ze met zijn handlanger in de auto zit en ze onverwachts een alternatieve route rijden. Ze slaat zijn handlanger bewusteloos en ontsnapt. Ze houdt zich schuil in een verlaten hutje.
