Abstract

Since 1990 the EU has enlarged to incorporate much of the Northern Europe including Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and the former East Germany. It has become the entity towards which the minor, small and great powers in the European north, and many regional agents and organizations there tend to look before anything else, and towards which regional political and economic activities increasingly tend to gear. This book provides the first comprehensive account of the emergence of the European Union as a north European power. It places the EU as an international actor not only in the context of North Europe but also creates a new understanding of (inter)relations between the EU and the unified states of the region. This unique study provides: A fresh approach to the under-theorized field of EU foreign policy. Key empirical material, including hundreds of documents, interviews and field experiments. In-depth case studies of relations between the EU, Nordic states, Baltic States and Russia with its north-western regions. This book will be of very strong interest to scholars of European Politics, foreign policy studies, Russian studies and International Relations.

Abstract

Russian foreign policy has become an increasing concern in 21st century, together with Russia's relations with its former Soviet neighbours - but its relations with the Baltic States are particularly sensitive, given the Baltic membership of NATO and the EU and Russia's increasingly fractious relations with those institutions. This book discusses the development of Russia's approach to the new security architecture in Europe and assesses the prospects for a more active engagement of Russia in the Baltic Sea region and Europe as a whole. The book considers the full range of issues
