De tout temps les architectes ont su prendre avantage des innovations scientifiques et technologiques qui leurs étaient proposées, que ce soit la révolution industrielle ou l'apparition du béton armée. La révolution des technologies numériques ne fait pas défaut et se voit être le champs d'investigation de nombreux architectes. Les nouveaux processus dirigés par informatique nous offrent de nouveaux horizons quant aux possibilités architecturales. Ce potentiel créatif couplé avec les progrès de fabrication a déjà fait ses preuves dans dautres domaines tel que lautomobile, laérospatial, la construction navale. Ils permettent douvrir un champ dinvestigation pour larchitecture, de requestionner les principes platoniciens et de permettre lexpérimentation de nouvelles géométries. Les progrès du dessin assisté par ordinateur (CAD) et de la fabrication assistée par ordinateur (CAM), bien que tout récent, ont permis de nouvelles opportunités au niveau de formes très complexes. Celles-ci étaient jusquà présent, très difficiles à dessiner, à concevoir et à fabriquer en utilisant des technologies traditionnelles. Aujourdhui, un lien continu est établi de la conception jusquà la réception.Ces formes complexes suscite des questions : Pourquoi l'architecte en arrive-t-il à cette forme? Comment il l'a conçoit et comment il la représente? Comment l'architecte fait basculer son projet d'une modélisation 3d à une réalisation concrète? Comment passe-t-il du virtuel au réel?Le but premier de ce mémoire est d'essayer de répondre à ces question en établissant un certain mode opératoire face aux formes non-standards. Dans un premier temps, comment concevoir et modéliser une forme aujourd'hui. Dans un second temps, comment pousser les intentions d'un projet au travers de la fabrication, et principalement par le biais de machines-outils à contrôle numérique.

The 15 essays in "Architecture as a craft" present a vision of the architectural discipline in which the essence is sought in the craft itself. The book is based on the symposium of the same name that the Delft University of Technology organised in 2009. The authors include the architects Michiel Riedijk, Sou Fujimoto and Gregg Pasquarelli. Society imposes stringent demands on the designs of architects, for example in the field of sustainability. Programmes of requirements are drawn up for this purpose that exert a strong influence on the design. The contributors to "Architecture as a craft", however, consider that it is necessary to grasp the structure of a design without these external influences playing a role. The craft of the architect is approached in this book from three perspectives: the position adopted by the architect in the design and construction process, the composition of the design, and the choice of materials of the design.
