Having lived with the World Wide Web for twenty years, surfing the Web becomes a way of our life that cannot be separated. From latest news, photo sharing, social activities, to research collaborations and even commercial activities and government affairs, almost all kinds of information are available and processible via the Web. While people are appreciating the great invention, the father of the Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, has started the plan for the next generation of the Web, the Semantic Web. Unlike the Web that was originally designed for reading, the Semantic Web aims at a more intelligent Web severing machines as well as people. The idea behind it is simple: machines can automatically process or “understand” the information, if explicit meanings are given to it. In this way, it facilitates sharing and reuse of data across applications, enterprises, and communities. According to the organisation of the book, the intended readers may come from two groups, i.e. those whose interests include Semantic Web and want to catch on the state-of-the-art research progress in this field; and those who urgently need or just intend to seek help from the Semantic Web. In this sense, readers are not limited to the computer science. Everyone is welcome to find their possible intersection of the Semantic Web.

Official Tourism Websites: A Discourse Analysis Perspective investigates the construction and promotion of identity of tourist locales by the designers of the official websites for destinations such as Santiago de Compostela, Spain; the Baltic states of Latvia and Estonia; New Orleans, Louisiana and Gary, Indiana; Myanmar/Burma; US Sports Halls of Fame; and, in recognizing the influence and popularity of such sites, three websites parodying the imaginary nations of Phaic Tan, Molvania, and San Sombrero. Analysis addresses how tourism websites foster social action and, therefore, contribute to the (re)construction of nations and other communities by variably fostering re-imagination, rebirth, renaissance, promotion and caution, and patriotism. Recognizing that tourism texts can function to both construct and embody identity for their respective locales, this investigation employs critical discourse analysis, multimodal discourse analysis, and visual semiotic analysis in the investigation of web texts and images.

Web-based Support Systems (WSS) are an emerging multidisciplinary research area in which one studies the support of human activities with the Web as the common platform, medium and interface. One of the goals of WSS research is to extend the human physical limitation of information processing in the information age. Research on WSS is motivated by the challenges and opportunities arising from the Internet. The availability, accessibility and flexibility of information as well as the tools to access this information lead to a vast amount of opportunities. It identifies both domain independent and dependent activities before selecting suitable computer and Web technologies to support them. It also examines how applications and adaptations of existing methodologies on the web platform benefit our decision-making and other various activities. This book presents research related to fundamental issues of WSS, frameworks for WSS and current research on WSS. The research on Web-based support systems is classified into three parts: - Web-based support systems for specific domains - Web-based applications and WSS techniques - Design and Development of WSS.

The emergence of Web technologies for data and knowledge interaction gives rise to the need for supportive frameworks for knowledge distribution. Semantic Web technologies aim at providing shared semantic spacesfor Web contents, such that people, applications and communities can use a common platform to share information. Also, many of the challenging aspects of the research problems tackled in the Semantic Web area fall in the realm of artificial intelligence or employment of AI techniques. Canadian Semantic Web: Technologies and Applications is an edited volume contributed by worldwide leaders in Semantic Web research, and was based on the May 2009, Canadian Semantic Web Symposium, Kelowna, BC. This volume will introduce the most advanced working theories, prototypes and applications on; AI technologies in the Semantic Web, Languages, tools and methodologies for the Semantic Web, Searching, querying, visualizing and interpreting the Semantic Web, Semantic Web-based Knowledge Management, Semantic Grid and semantic Grid services, Trust, privacy, security on the Semantic Web and more. A special focus on applications of semantic web technology on electronic health. About this book: Introduces the most advanced working theories, prototypes and applications. Provides a special focus on applications of semantic web technology on electronic health. This book is intended for practitioners and researchers working in the related fields of the Semantic Web. Advanced-level focusing on computer science will also find this book valuable as a secondary text or reference book.
