This book examines the independent debates and modes of thought that have developed in the field of cultural sociology. It describes a variety of pathways for engaging in cultural sociology, all of which offer a template for elucidating the ways that meaning shapes social life. It offers an account of the origins of cultural sociology and how it has grown into the maturity it enjoys today, focusing on the so-called “cultural turn”—an epochal transformation in the human sciences—and the need to reflect on what could be learned from adjacent disciplines about cultural analysis. It also explores the major differences and disagreements between a “cultural sociology” and a “sociology of culture,” the impact of cultural sociology on other academic disciplines of inquiry, the tensions within the field, and a cultural sociological approach to power and solidarity.

La jeunesse occidentale des années 1950 et 1960 s'est construit un univers propre, avec ses lois, ses codes, ses valeurs, et l'a organisé autour d'une musique neuve et forte : une culture rock. Au cœur de cette culture, il y avait la volonté de se différencier du monde adulte, de s'opposer à ses compromissions et à ses censures. La rébellion s'est avérée le mode de fonctionnement privilégié de la culture rock. Très vite, pourtant, l'utopie a fait place à l'amertume. On a dénoncé la naïveté de la révolte rock, la récupération commerciale dont elle aurait fait l'objet. Mais est-ce bien de cela qu'il s'agit ? Cet ouvrage explore une autre hypothèse : celle d'une identité structurelle entre les objectifs de la culture rock et l'organisation capitaliste de nos sociétés, une convergence fondée sur la stratégie du slogan et du star-system, sur la provocation et l'outrance. Peut-on alors encore parler de rébellion rock ? Quelles voix reste-t-il pour porter le refus de l'autorité, du conformisme et du statu quo ?
