Abstract

Galen (Claudius Galenus, 129-c. 199 CE) is the most famous physician of the Greco-Roman world whose writings have survived. A Greek from a wealthy family, raised and educated in the Greek city of Pergamon, he acquired his medical education by travelling widely in the Roman world, visiting the famous medical centres and studying with leading doctors. His career took him to Rome, where he was appointed by the emperor Marcus Aurelius as his personal physician; he also served succeeding emperors in this role. A huge corpus of writings on medicine which bear Galen's name has survived. The task of editing and publishing such a corpus, and of identifying the authentic Galenic texts within it, is a hugely challenging one, and the 22-volume edition reissued here, edited by Karl Gottlob Kühn (1754-1840) and published in Leipzig between 1821 and 1833, has never yet been equalled.

Abstract

Menodotos aus Nikomedia (2. Jh. n. This book offers the first scientific monograph en-tirely devoted to an empirical doctor, together with a collection of fragments in the form of a "running commentary". In the resulting frame, a more reliable historical position is re-covered for Menodotus (and, through him, for the last development of Greek empirical medicine), and the usual picture is substantially altered. Main lines of the work are the problem of sources, which can be identified almost exclusively with the famous doctor Galen, and of their trustworthiness; the misunderstood role of Menodotus as a source of Galen for his picture of Empiricism; the mutual relationship between the concepts of reason and experience, and the problematical acceptance of the former into the empirical doctrine; the relationship of Menodotus to his forerunners, not only inside the school but also in the post-Aristotelian history of medicine and philosophy, starting from Diocles of Carystus and up to Heraclides of Tarentum and to the Epicureanism of Philodemus. The Introduction tries a.o. to understand the role of Greek Empiricism in the history of science. The book also contains a detailed bibliography and five Indexes, as well as an Epilegomenon, in which the authenticity of some works of Galen concerning Empiricism is discussed.

Abstract

Great change has pervaded the evaluation of this text, since it was first published by Diels in 1893: it appeared to be a text consisting of notes on an introductory course of medicine, badly copied by a scribe or an uneducated pupil, probably written in the age of Domitian or Trajan. Its most disturbing aspect was the presence of a doxography on the causes of disease, attributed to Aristotle, recording numerous doxai of 5th and 4th century physicians and philosophers, including Hippocrates, who constituted the crux of the controversy, because the figure ill accorded with the image that had taken shape in nineteenth-century historiography. In recent years new insights have shown that actually it is an autograph, an unfinished draft, that the author, to be dated to 1st cent. AD, excerpted earlier derivative literature but has also views of his own, that the doxography derived from 'Aristotle' is to be clearly placed in the early Peripatetic setting, that the physiological section, which follows, has a background of school practice in dialectical argument, that the main authorities "ed in the text (Herophilus, Erasistratus and Asclepiades) have different roles (Herophilus's is the most positive) but the authors always feels at liberty to confute their opinions and treats them as characters of the same scientific context.
