Ecologies of Affect offers a synthetic introduction to the felt dynamics of cities and the character of places. The contributors capture the significance of affects, including desire, nostalgia, memory, and hope, in forming the identity and tone of places. The critical intervention this collection of essays makes is an active, consistent engagement with the virtualities that produce and refract our idealized attachments to place. Contributors show how place images and attempts to build communities are not abstractions but are fundamentally tied to and resolve around such intangibles. We understand nostalgia, desire, and hope as virtual; that is, even though they are not material, they are nonetheless and must be accounted for. In this book, the authors take up affect, emotion, and emplacement and consider them in relation to one another and how they work to produce and are produced by certain temporal and spatial dimensions.

Anthropology is a disciplined inquiry into the conditions and potentials of human life. Generations of theorists, however, have expunged life from their accounts, treating it as the mere output of patterns, codes, structures or systems variously defined as genetic or cultural, natural or social. Building on his classic work The Perception of the Environment, Tim Ingold sets out to restore life to where it should belong, at the heart of anthropological concern. Being Alive ranges over such themes as the vitality of materials, what it means to make things, the percept

This chapter provides a transcript of the panel session held late in the Landscape in Language Workshop to discuss ethical issues, especially in the context of research by, or with, Indigenous peoples. The session was chaired by David Stea and the panel members were Renee Louis, Carmelita Topaha, Andrew Turk and Renée Sieber. Eight other workshop participants also contributed to the discussion. The transcript of the panel session has been slightly edited to remove comments about the process and to improve the coherence and flow of the dialogue. No significant content was removed.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th International Conference on GeoSpatial Semantics, GeoS 2011, held in Brest, France, in May 2011. The 13 papers presented together with 1 invited talk were carefully reviewed and selected from 23 submissions. The papers focus on formal and semantic approaches, time and activity-based patterns, ontologies, as well as quality, conflicts and semantic integration. They are organized in topical sections on ontologies and gazetteers, activity-based and temporal issues, models, quality and semantic similarities, and retrieval and discovery methods.
