Onder de paraplu van de Verenigde Naties zijn een groot aantal autonome Gespecialiseerde Organisaties actief die een grote impact hebben op ons dagelijks leven op diverse terreinen zoals gezondheid, telecommunicatie, industrialisering en onderwijs. Dit boek wenst de structuren en bevoegdheden van deze organisaties, en de politieke ontwikkelingen die deze organisaties hebben doorgemaakt, op overzichtelijke wijze in kaart te brengen. Since the first edition of this book was published in 2010, United Nations peace operations have evolved significantly. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic, and South Sudan, UN peacekeepers are now engaged in building peace by fighting non-State armed actors, and must consider issues concerning the application of law and policy governing the use of armed force when protecting civilians. In addition, the UN and its peacekeepers are increasingly being held to higher standards of accountability to ensure that their engagement with local forces and populations meets normative requirements found in international humanitarian law and international human rights law. This extensively revised edition of Documents on the Law of UN Peace Operations addresses the key normative principles, rules, and standards that have been a part of this evolution. The book provides essential documents, accompanied with commentary, which identify and explain the legal framework or applicable legal norms involved in the planning, management and conduct of UN peace operations. Topics covered include obligations under international humanitarian law, human rights law, international criminal law, and privileges and immunities. Special attention is also paid to matters such as accountability, the rule of law, and the protection of civilians.

Against the World maps South Africa's journey to increasing isolation in the United Nations, from a respected member in 1945 to a pariah' in the early sixties. The book reveals how this country became the main architect of its own growing isolation, since it refused to modify domestic policies that alienated even its potential allies. Its low profile in debates and constant abstention on human rights instruments were seen as a lack of interest in global humanitarian affairs. Events unfold from 1945, when Field Marshall JC Smuts proposed the adoption of a Preamble to the United Nations Charter. Three years later, South Africa refused to sign the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Global criticism against apartheid intensified, until in 1960 it culminated in calls from African members for economic and diplomatic sanctions. By 1961, South Africa had become isolated in the United Nations and relegated to a moral wilderness. For the modern reader of history and social affairs, the book clarifies South Africa's past and present role in the evolution of international humanitarian law.
