Rationality in its various expressions and innumerable applications sustains understanding and our sense of reality. It is traditionally differentiated according to its sources in the soul: in consciousness, in reason, in experience, and in elevation. Such a functional approach, however, leaves us searching for the common foundation harmonizing these rationalities. The perennial quest to resolve the aporias of rationality is finding in contemporary science's focus on origins, on the generative roots of reality, tantalizing hints as to how this may be accomplished. This project is enhanced by the wave of recent phenomenology/ontopoiesis of life, which reveals the workings of the logos at the root of beingness and all rationality, whereby we gaze upon the prospect of a New Enlightenment. In the rays of this vision the revival of the intuitions of classical Islamic metaphysics, particularly intuition of the continuity of beingness in the gradations of life, receive fresh confirmation.

The controversy of flux and stasis as the groundwork of reality of Greek ancient philosophy reached its crux in the all encompassing doctrine of the logos by Heraclitus of Ephesus. It centers upon human soul in its role with the cosmos. Philosophy of the Occident corroborating Greek insights with the progress of culture in numerous interpretations (Kant, Kierkegaard, Husserl, Merleau-Ponty, Ricoeur ¦), presented in this collection has neglected the cosmic sphere. While contemporary development of science revealed its grounding principles (papers by Grandpierre, Kule and Trutty-Coohill) the ancient logos fully emerges. Thus, logos hitherto hidden in our commerce with earth is revealed in its intertwinings with the cosmos through the trajectories of the phenomenology/ontopoiesis of life (Tymieniecka). The crucial link between the soul and the cosmos, in a new geo-cosmic horizon, is thus being retrieved.

This volume begins with Schutz's sketch of how Husserl influenced him. It shows how phenomenological theory of the social sciences differs from positivistic approaches, and presents Schutz's theory of relevances--a key feature of his own phenomenology of the social world. It contains exchanges between Schutz and Eric Voegelin, Felix Kaufmann, Aron Gurwitsch, and Talcott Parsons, and presents, for the first time, Schutz's incisive criticisms of T.S. Eliot's theory of culture.

Whereas for the wider public Jan Patocka is known mainly through the circumstances of his death in Prague, on March 13, 1977, after long interrogations by the Communist secret police, as a defender of human and civic rights in Czechoslovakia and one of the first spokespersons of the Charter 77 movement, the international philosophical community sees in him an important and inspiring thinker, who elaborated in an original way the great wellsprings and impulses of European thought - mainly Husserl's phenomenology and Heidegger's philosophy of existence. Patocka also reflected on the future of humanity in a globalized world and laid the foundations of an original philosophy of history. His work is a subject of lively philosophical discussion especially in French and German-speaking countries, but also, more recently, in the Hispanic world, North America and the Far East. In April 2007 scholars interested in Patocka's philosophy gathered in Prague from around the world to commemorate his centenary and the thirtieth anniversary of his death. The conference explored the significance of his work and its growing influence on contemporary philosophy. This volume presents in English language selected papers from the centenary conference
