"Est-ce Jésus qui a fondé le christianisme ?" Jésus était juif, il est mort juif. Ce qui est devenu le christianisme a d'abord été une mouvance spirituelle, une "Voie", à l'intérieur de la religion juive. Il en est sorti vers la fin du 1e siècle. "Le christianisme naissant était-il une religion ?" Il a vécu sans prêtres ni temples pendant plus d'un siècle et demi. S'il a possédé très tôt quelques pratiques rituelles et cultuelles, il n'était pas véritablement une religion au sens où on l'entendait dans l'Antiquité, c'est-à-dire au sens où il aurait été la religion d'une société religieuse particulière avec ses temples et ses prêtres. "Le christianisme avait-il pour but de créer une société chrétienne ?" Il se développe durant les trois premiers siècles en dehors de toute attache à une société quelconque. Il s'inspire d'un idéal de fraternité universelle qui le situe à l'opposé du modèle général des sociétés religieuses de l'Antiquité. Ce n'est pas l'Eglise, ce sont des empereurs romains qui en ont fait au quatrième siècle la religion officielle de leur empire. Telles sont les principales questions qu'aborde cet ouvrage. Réalisé à partir des travaux d'un certain nombre d'historiens de cette période extrêmement complexe, il tente de fournir au lecteur quelques éléments de réflexion sur le mode synthétique le plus clair possible.
