The term "Pogranichie" is the Russian language equivalent to the English term "borderland" and this work studies how borderlands serve as distinctively creative spaces for cultural exchange. The book studies how social interactions occur in post-soviet bloc countries that try to democratize, and presents a model for Eastern European development. If there is a lack of actorship in social processes and communication is broken off, then development cannot occur. The authors look at what circumstances promote agency and actorship which in turn changes the dynamic of the entire Pogranichie communit

There is continued discussion in International Relations surrounding the existence (or not) of the 'democratic peace' - the idea that democracies do not fight each other. This book argues that threats to homeland territories force centralization within the state, for three reasons. First, territorial threats are highly salient to individuals, and leaders must respond by promoting the security of the state. Second, threatened territories must be defended by large, standing land armies and these armies can then be used as forces for repression during times of peace. Finally, domestic political bargaining is dramatically altered during times of territorial threat, with government opponents joining the leader in promoting the security of the state. Leaders therefore have a favorable environment in which to institutionalize greater executive power. These forces explain why conflicts are associated with centralized states, and in turn why peace is associated with democracy.

Smugglers and Saints of the Sahara describes life on and around the contemporary border between Algeria and Mali, exploring current developments in a broad historical and socioeconomic context. Basing her findings on long-term fieldwork with trading families, truckers, smugglers and scholars, Judith Scheele investigates the history of contemporary patterns of mobility from the late nineteenth century to the present. Through a careful analysis of family ties and local economic records, this book shows how long-standing mobility and interdependence have shaped not only local economies, but also notions of social hierarchy, morality and political legitimacy, creating patterns that endure today and that need to be taken into account in any empirically-grounded study of the region.

In the context of European integration, the relative opening of state borders offers new opportunities for border cities and regions no longer necessarily confined to the boundaries of national territories. The development of cross-border relations at the local and regional levels brings to the fore the emergence of cross-border metropolitan regions as privileged sites of territorial restructuring. Drawing on the results of the Metrolux research project, this book examines the establishment of a cross-border metropolitan region in Luxembourg and its surrounding area. In the first section, the primary focus is on the economic and symbolic attributes that characterize the process of metropolisation and their potential advantages and limits. The second part of the volume investigates the cross-border interdependencies at work, principally in terms of home-work mobility. Finally, the third part analyses the governance initiatives undertaken and the power issues at stake in the political construction of a cross-border metropolitan region. Primarily derived from research by geographers, this work combines conceptual reflection with empirical analysis and is a new contribution to the understanding of an atypical area of scholarship emerging from the geographic margins and the academic backstage.

In the West, media coverage of Afghanistan and Pakistan is framed by military and political concerns, resulting in a simplistic picture of ageless barbarity, terrorist safe havens, and peoples in need of either punishment or salvation. Under the Drones looks beyond this limiting view to investigate real people on the ground, and to analyze the political, social, and economic forces that shape their lives. Understanding the complexity of life along the 1,600-mile border between Afghanistan and Pakistan can help America and its European allies realign their priorities in the region to address genuine problems, rather than fabricated ones. This volume explodes Western misunderstandings by revealing a land that abounds with human agency, perpetual innovation, and vibrant complexity. Through the work of historians and social scientists, the thirteen essays here explore the real and imagined presence of the Taliban; the animated sociopolitical identities expressed through traditions like Pakistani truck decoration; Sufism's ambivalent position as an alternative to militancy; the long and contradictory history of Afghan media; and the simultaneous brutality and potential that heroin brings to women in the area. Moving past shifting conceptions of security, the authors expose the West's prevailing perspective on the region as strategic, targeted, and alarmingly dehumanizing. Under the Drones is an essential antidote to contemporary media coverage and military concerns.
