Friedrich Rudolf Hohl (1916–1979) war der engste Freund des Soziologen Niklas Luhmann. Außer ihrem Studienfach (Jura) teilten Hohl und Luhmann die Liebe zur Philosophie und zur Kunst. Der geistige Austausch war der Motor ihrer Beziehung. Nachdem Hohl, von Schmerzen gequält, in den 60er Jahren seine Tätigkeit als Jura-Dozent aufgeben musste, konzentrierte sich sein Leben auf das Schreiben von Gedichten. Luhmann bestärkte ihn darin. Seinen Vorschlag, die Gedichte zu veröffentlichen, setzte Hohl nie in die Tat um. Hohls Nachlass, aus dem diese Erstveröffentlichung schöpft, umfasst etwa 470 handgeschriebene Gedichte. Niklas Luhmann bezeichnete die Gedichte seines Freundes Hohl als ›Denkgedichte‹. Der wichtigste Berührungspunkt war für die beiden Freunde die von Luhmann kreierte Systemtheorie, deren Kerngedanken Hohl in die poetische Sprache einzuführen versuchte.
