This established text book can be used to study and try out philosophical methods in practice. The third, completely revised edition contains eleven new articles, bringing the book in line with current courses: abduction, cluster definition, experimental philosophy, explication, context definition, criteria, methods, naturalistic fallacy, neologism, necessity and sufficiency - set theory, and stipulative definition.

This two-volume work was John Stuart Mill's first major book. It reinvented the modern study of logic & laid the foundations for his later work in the areas of political economy, women's rights & representative government. In clear, systematic prose, Mill disentangles syllogistic logic from its origins in Aristotle & scholasticism & grounds it instead in processes of inductive reasoning. An important attempt at integrating empiricism within a more general theory of human knowledge, the work constitutes essential reading for anyone seeking a full understanding of Mill's thought. Continuing the discussion of induction, Volume 2 concludes with Book VI, 'On the Logic of the Moral Sciences', in which Mill applies empirical reasoning to human behaviour. A crucial early formulation of his thinking regarding free will & necessity, this book establishes the centrality of 'the social science' to Mill's philosophy.

Is reality logical and is logic real? What is the origin of logical intuitions? What is the role of logical structures in the operations of an intelligent mind and in communication? Is the function of logical structure regulative or constitutive or both in concept formation? This volume provides analyses of the logic-reality relationship from different approaches and perspectives. The point of convergence lies in the exploration of the connections between reality – social, natural or ideal – and logical structures employed in describing or discovering it. Moreover, the book connects logical theory with more concrete issues of rationality, normativity and understanding, thus pointing to a wide range of potential applications. The papers collected in this volume address cutting-edge topics in contemporary discussions amongst specialists. Some essays focus on the role of indispensability considerations in the justification of logical competence, and the wide range of challenges within the philosophy of mathematics. Others present advances in dynamic logical analysis such as extension of game semantics to non-logical part of vocabulary and development of models of contractive speech act.
