Abstract

Rare earth elements have become very important in today's technology, and the demand for them is rising. However, there are only a few ore deposits that are commercialy exploitable, and the most important ones are located in China. Due to the rising demand and the monopoly China currently has on the export of rare earths, prices are rising exponentially. New ways have to be found to provide for these rare earths. One of them is to recycle the rare earth metals that heve ended up in waste streams. To develop recycling processes, first of all fundamental data is needed. This thesis will concentrate on composing several phase diagrams of a certain slag system containing some rare earth metals. These phase diagrams are the starting point for developing recycling processes.
