Abstract

In 1501, the Alsatian inquisitor and witch-hunter Heinrich Institoris (Kramer) was pursuing Hussites in Moravia. As part of his anti-heretical campaign, he published a pamphlet exalting the stigmatization of Lucia Brocadelli of Narni. In this pamphlet, he also praised the mystical experiences of other contemporary Italian women mystics. The present volume explores the story of this pamphlet – the motivations for its publication, its contents, its circulation, and its influence – and provides the first critical edition of its intriguing text. The intersection of female sanctity and the anxiety over diabolic witchcraft, Christian heterodoxy, Jewish obstinacy, and the growing Turkish threat provides the pamphlet’s compelling backstory. Thus, this book argues that the pamphlet crystallized some of the major religious, cultural, and politico-military concerns that prevailed in Europe shortly before the breakup of Western Christendom.

Abstract

This detailed treatise comprehensively examines a topic much debated by scholars: the supporting hermeneutic for the biblical doctrine of Royal Supremacy. This hermeneutic is fundamental for the establishment of national churches, specifically the Church of England. in this instance, deriving from it a biblical doctrine of Kingship. The author examines the development of the doctrine of Royal Supremacy, beginning with Henry VIII and continuing up to Elizabeth I and the passage of the Act of Supremacy in 1559. He contrasts scriptural discussions connected with Royal Supremacy found in polemical

Abstract

In The Reception of Bodin an international and interdisciplinary team of seventeen scholars considers one of the most remarkable figures in European intellectual history, the sixteenth-century jurist and philosopher Jean Bodin, as a ‘prismatic agent’ in the transmission of ideas. The subject is approached in the light of reception theory coupled with critical evaluation of key texts as well as features of Bodin’s own career. Bodin is treated as recipient of knowledge gleaned from multifarious sources, and his readers as receivers responding diversely to his work in various contexts and from various standpoints. The volume provides searching insights both into Bodin’s mental world and into processes that served to cross-fertilise European intellectual life from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment. Contributors include Ann Blair, Harald E. Braun, Glenn Burgess, Peter Burke, Vittor Ivo Comparato, Marie-Dominique Couzinet, Luc Foisneau, Robert von Friedeburg, Mark Greengrass, Virginia Krause, Johannes Machielsen, Christian Martin, Sara Miglietti, Diego Quaglioni, Jonathan Schüz, Michaela Valente.

Abstract

The religious persecution and intellectual intolerance of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries compelled many heterodox groups and thinkers to resort to misdirection, hidden meaning, secrecy, and deceit. In this highly unusual interpretation, Perez Zagorin traces the theory and practice of religious leaders, philosophers, intellectuals, and men of letters who used deception to cloak dissident beliefs. Zagorin surveys some of the chief sources of early modern doctrines of dissimulation in the Bible and the works of theologians from Jerome and Augustine to Erasmus, Luther, and Calvin. Subjects covered include Nicodemism, the name given by Calvin to secret Protestants who concealed their faith behind a facade of conformity to Catholic worship; crypto-Judaism in Spain; and the hidden beliefs of English Catholics. Other topics include the Catholic doctrine of mental reservation; the place of dissimulation in English Protestant casuistry; occultism; and dissimulation of religious unbelief among philosophers and men of letters. In charting the widespread phenomenon of lying and deceit and by exploring its evolutions, Perez Zagorin has made an important contribution to the historiography of an intellectually roiling and perilous time. He adds a vital dimension to our understanding of the religious, intellectual, and cultural history of the epoch before the modern. Lacey Baldwin Smith finds this hook "an impressive and scholarly work of cultural synthesis that coins a fresh label for the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: the age of dissimulation. Zagorin's efforts to compare and contrast Catholic and Protestant styles of dissimulation and Nicodemism are important, casting a new perspective and focus on the religious and intellectual dissent of the era."
