Through close readings of major poems, this book examines why the second-generation Romantic poets - Byron, Shelley, and Keats - stage so much of their poetry in Eastern or Orientalized settings. It argues that they do so not only to interrogate their own imaginations, but also as a way of criticizing Europe's growing imperialism. For them the Orient is a projection of Europe's own fears and desires. It is therefore a charged setting in which to explore and contest the limits of the age's aesthetics, politics and culture. Being nearly always self-conscious and ironic, the poets' treatment of the Orient becomes itself a twinned criticism of 'Romantic' egotism and the Orientalism practised by earlier generations. The book goes further to claim that poems like Shelley's Revolt of Islam, Byron's 'Eastern' Tales, or even Keats's Lamia anticipate key issues at stake in postcolonial studies more generally.

"Information is power. For more than five hundred years the success or failure of nations has been determined by a country's ability to acquire knowledge and technical skill and transform them into strength and prosperity. Leading historian Jeremy Black approaches global history from a distinctive perspective, focusing on the relationship between information and society and demonstrating how the understanding and use of information have been the primary factors in the development and character of the modern age. Black suggests that the West's ascension was a direct result of its institutions and social practices for acquiring, employing, and retaining information and the technology that was ultimately produced. His cogent and well-reasoned analysis looks at cartography and the hardware of communication, armaments and sea power, mercantilism and imperialism, science and astronomy, as well as bureaucracy and the management of information, linking the history of technology with the history of global power while providing important indicators for the future of our world"--

The 'War on Terror' gave rise to stark visions of a Christian West battling a mad mullah from the East over nothing less than the fate of civilization. These baldly Orientalist constructions are only the latest incarnation of an older, deeper relationship between Orientalism and war, one that can be traced as far back as the Greek and Persian wars of antiquity. This volume examines the Orientalist constructs that arise from conflict and military intervention in the non-European world.

This volume presents a history of the idea of the 'Clash of Civilisations' with particular reference to the myth of an inevitable confrontation between Islam and the West. It delves into history all the way back to the wars between Persia and Greece, the Crusades, Colonialism and the Enlightenment and brings this analysis forward to the contemporary 'war on terror'.

"A multidisciplinary study of Western-Muslim interactions in historical and contemporary times, this volume explores ways of enhancing productive engagement in domestic and transnational contexts. Leading scholars discuss Western-Muslim intersections in the areas of civil society, educational curriculum, government policy, legal reform, media production, political participation, public discourse, and public opinion. This book appears at a time when Western forces are withdrawing from Afghanistan and policymakers are exploring the viability of long-term approaches that go beyond securitization and militarization. Engaging the Other will appeal to readers specifically interested in policy issues relating to conflict, culture, diaspora, education, immigration, inter-faith dialogue, intercultural and international relations, Islam and the West, law, media, multiculturalism, national security, political participation, public discourse, public policy, and religion"--

"In Islam Through Western Eyes, Jonathan Lyons unpacks Western habits of thinking and writing about Islam, conducting a careful analysis of the West's grand totalizing narrative across one thousand years of history. He observes the discourse's corrosive effects on the social sciences, including sociology, politics, philosophy, theology, international relations, security studies, and human rights scholarship. He follows its influence on research, speeches, political strategy, and government policy, preventing the West from responding effectively to its most significant twenty-first-century challenges: the rise of Islamic power, the emergence of religious violence, and the growing tension between established social values and multicultural rights among Muslim immigrant populations."--Jacket.
