The carillon, the world's largest musical instrument, originated in the 16th century when inhabitants of the Low Countries started to produce music on bells in church and city towers. Today, carillon music still fills the soundscape of cities in Belgium and the Netherlands. Since the First World War, carillon music has become popular in the United States, where it adds a spiritual dimension to public parks and university campuses. This book opens up the fascinating world of the carillon to the reader. It tells the great stories of European and American carillon history: the quest for the perfect musical bell, the fate of carillons in times of revolt and war, the role of patrons such as John D. Rockefeller Jr. and Herbert Hoover in the development of American carillon culture, and the battle between singing bronze and carillon electronics. Richly illustrated with original photographs and etchings, this book tells how people developed, played, and enjoyed bell music.

Late medieval and early modern cities are often depicted as cradles of artistic creativity and hotbeds of new material culture. Cities in Renaissance Italy and in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century north-western Europe are the most obvious cases in point. But, how did this come about? Contributors to this volume set out to analyze whether, in what context and why regulation or deregulation influenced innovation and creativity in late medieval and early modern cities, and what the impact was of long-term changes in the political and economic sphere.

Pendant longtemps, les historiens qui se sont intéressés à l'histoire institutionnelle des anciens Pays-Bas ont souvent privilégié une approche structurelle des organes de gouvernement, en négligeant les hommes qui participaient au fonctionnement de ces derniers. Les points de vue ont considérablement évolués au cours des dernières décennies et les "fourmis ouvrières" du gouvernement des Pays-Bas d'Ancien Régime ont de plus en plus fait l'objet de toutes les attentions. Ce travail veut participer à ce renouvellement de l'histoire institutionnelle. Sur base de la consultation de plus de 1000 liasses d'archives, une prosopographie, comptant 810 notices, a pu voir le jour. Elle a d'ailleurs été publiée en 2012 grâce à l'appui d'Archives et Bibliothèques de Belgique et des Archives générales du Royaume et des Archives de l'État dans les provinces. La comparaison des données récoltées a permis de dégager les traits caractéristiques d'un groupe social spécifique, d'une "caste", celle des fonctionnaires d'État au XVIIe siècle. Dans ce travail sont successivement étudiés les profils de carrière, les phénomènes de la vénalité publique, du népotisme et du favoritisme. Est également analysé le processus qui a engendré la naissance d’un véritable réseau de fonctionnaires, motivés par les mêmes ambitions sociales. Finalement, sur base des quelques documents retrouvés, nous avons tenté de reconstituer, autant que faire se peut, les cadres matériel et intellectuel dans lesquels évoluaient ces fonctionnaires d'État. À travers les visages des grands commis du gouvernement central, ce travail veut rendre une certaine jeunesse à cette vieille fille qu'est l'histoire institutionnelle et aussi apporter sa pierre à la compréhension des sociétés et des institutions européennes d'Ancien Régime
