Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) has played an instrumental role among the many advances in the field of congenital heart disease (CHD) that have resulted in successful and continually improving clinical outcomes, today enabling most affected infants and children to live well into adulthood. Ongoing evolution of the technology (including three-dimensional TEE) promises to maintain this imaging approach at the forefront of clinical practice. Competent performance of TEE in the patient with CHD, however, requires a number of essential technical and cognitive skills, in addition to a solid understanding of the broad spectrum of congenital pathology. Thus, the important need for a comprehensive reference on the subject to assist specialists who care for these patients. Transesophageal Echocardiography for Congenital Heart Disease represents a unique work, the only textbook of its kind that focuses specifically upon the applications of TEE in CHD. In each chapter, the contributors—highly regarded specialists and leaders in the field—provide practical and instructive information on the many different aspects of CHD evaluation by TEE. The textbook is extensively supplemented with over 700 figures/illustrations and more than 400 high quality videos (available online). This reference will prove an invaluable resource for those who use TEE in the care of both children and adults with CHD, whether they be cardiologists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, sonographers, or trainees wishing to obtain basic knowledge or advance their understanding of the field.

This book describes the role of basic and advanced imaging techniques in the diagnosis of different types of cardiomyopathy, including dilated cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, restrictive cardiomyopathy, arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy and infiltrative/storage cardiomyopathies. While the main focus is on echocardiography, the applications of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography are also described. Throughout, a clinically oriented approach is employed: detailed attention is paid to differential diagnosis and numerous high-quality images depict the main features of the various types of cardiomyopathy. Consideration is also given to the genetics of cardiomyopathies, with analysis of genotype-phenotype relationships. Finally, the potential value of imaging in prognostic assessment and in guiding treatment is described.

This book describes the use of real-time three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography (3D TEE) in percutaneous interventional procedures, underlining its growing role and acceptance among interventional cardiologists, while also considering technique-related weaknesses. One issue has always been to provide trainees with appropriate learning tools and this reference will provide important support for those cardiologists taking their first steps in 3D TEE. Real-Time 3D Interventional Echocardiography includes information that all involved in the management of cardiac patients will find useful in terms of describing the anatomy of the structure to be treated (atrial septum, mitral valve), describing the morphopathology as seen with real-time 3D TEE (degenerative or ischemic mitral regurgitation), presenting up-to-date indications for the specific percutaneous treatment and, finally, providing descriptions of the procedures. Because interventional cardiology today ranges from closure of atrial and ventricular septal defects to repair of mitral regurgitation and aortic stenosis, from the closure of left atrial appendage and prosthesis dehiscence to the recent use of electrophysiological procedures, this book will be essential not only for specialists in echocardiography and interventional cardiology but also general cardiologists.
