Dieser Band untersucht wichtige Stationen der Vor- und Frühgeschichte der Aufklärung, zentrale Denker und Tendenzen der Aufklärungsepoche und deren Fortwirken. Es wird gezeigt, wie aufklärerische Impulse konzeptualisiert wurden und in Rezeption und Kritik mit aufklärungskritischen Positionen verflochten sind. Die Autoren rekonstruieren ursprüngliche Entwürfe, Korrekturen und Überbietungen und leisten so selbst eine Fortführung der Aufklärung, indem die aufklärerische Vernunft mit Kritik angereichert und dadurch reflexiv eingeholt wird. Nur die über ihre eigene Geschichte und ihre blinden Flecke aufgeklärte Vernunft kann der ursprünglichen Intention einer Emanzipation durch Kritik unter den komplexen Bedingungen der Gegenwart gerecht werden.
