"Architecture in Motion explores the genre of portable, transportable, demountable and temporary architecture. Moving buildings are among the earliest artefacts created by man, and yet they have a persisting relevance that enables a Bedouin tent to exist in the same world as a 90,000-ton aircraft carrier. The third edition of this definitive study examines the development of the moveable building from prehistory to the present day. From familiar vernacular models such as the tent, mobile home and houseboat, to developments in military and construction engineering, all aspects of portable architecture are considered. The impact of innovative technology on the creation of portable architecture and its influence on static and permanent building design is explored. The book makes comparisons between current, commercially available products and the work of innovative designers. It explores the philosophical and technological issues raised by contemporary, experimental and futuristic prototypes, and examines the suitability to purpose of portable building solutions in shelter after disaster situations. Key examples of contemporary portable buildings are examined to reveal the exciting, innovative. A greater understanding of the nature of transitory architecture could result in a new, ecologically aware design strategy that prioritises buildings that 'tread lightly on the earth' and still convey the sense of identity and community necessary for an established responsible society. This book provides a comprehensive, critical overview of the developments in architecture from 1960 to 2010. The first section provides a presentation of major movements in architecture after 1960, and the second, a geographic survey that covers a wide range of territories around the world. This book not only reflects the different perspectives of its various authors, but also charts a middle course between the 'aesthetic' histories that examine architecture solely in terms of its formal aspects, and the more 'ideological' histories that subject it to a critique that often skirts the discussion of its formal aspects.

Lauréat du prix Pritzker en 2009, Peter Zumthor est l'un des plus importants architectes contemporains. Son œuvre se caractérise par sa précision et son intransigeance - dans l'attention portée à l'accord entre le bâti, le lieu et l'usage, dans le choix des matériaux et dans la qualité de l'atmosphère de ses espaces. Comparativement peu nombreuses, ses réalisations ont une force expressive qui fascine ses pairs dans le monde entier et touche un vaste public.Si différents que puissent être dans leur apparence extérieure les thermes de Vals - classés monument historique deux ans seulement après leur achèvement -, la chapelle Bruder Klaus dans l'Eifel, le musée Kolumba à Cologne ou encore le Serpentine Pavilion à Londres, chaque bâtiment est en soi juste, et constitue une œuvre d'art totale et singulière, indissociablement liée au lieu. La monographie en cinq volumes présente près de 40 réalisations et projets de Peter Zumthor. Photography and architecture have a uniquely powerful resonance - architectural form provides the camera with the subject for some of its most compelling imagery, while photography profoundly influences how architecture is represented, imagined and produced. Camera Constructs is the first book to reflect critically on the varied interactions of the different practices by which photographers, artists, architects, theorists and historians engage with the relationship of the camera to architecture, the city and the evolution of Modernism. The title thus on the one hand opposes the medium of photography and the materiality of construction - but on the other can be read as saying that the camera invariably constructs what it depicts: the photograph is not a simple representation of an external reality, but constructs its own meanings and reconstructs its subjects. Twenty-three essays by a wide range of historians and theorists are grouped under the themes of ’Modernism and the Published Photograph’, ’Architecture and the City Re-imagined’, ’Interpretative Constructs’ and ’Photography in Design Practices.’ They are preceded by an Introduction that comprehensively outlines the subject and elaborates on the diverse historical and theoretical contexts of the authors’ approaches. Camera Constructs provides a rich and highly original analysis of the relationship of photography to built form from the early modern period to the present day.
