Abstract

'Couple Therapy for Depression' is an integrative 20-session couple therapy designed to treat depression in couples where there is also relationship distress. Following the recommendations of the UK's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for a behaviourally based couple therapy treatment, it draws on randomised controlled trial studies of efficacy as well as 'best practice' in behavioural, cognitive, emotionally focused, systemic, and psychodynamic couple therapies.

Abstract

"Why are we losing the fight against depression? In this groundbreaking work, psychologist Jonathan Rottenberg explains that despite advances in pharmaceutical science, progress has been hampered by our fundamental misunderstanding of depression as a psychological or chemical defect. Instead, Rottenberg introduces a surprising alternative: that depression is a particularly severe outgrowth of our natural capacity for emotion; it is a low mood gone haywire. Drawing on recent developments in the science of mood-and his own harrowing depressive experience as a young adult-Rottenberg explains depression in evolutionary terms, showing how its dark pull arises from adaptations that evolved to help our ancestors ensure their survival. Weaving together experimental and epidemiological research, clinical observations, and the voices of people who have struggled with depression, The Depths offers a bold new account of why depression endures-and points the way toward new paths for treatment"--

Abstract

No one is immune to intense emotions--and whether we accept them and how we regulate them can mean the difference between mental health or illness. The critical role of these complex emotional skills in human well-being is at the core of Affect Regulation Training (ART), which is gaining ground as both a preventive method and an adjunct to other therapies. Affect Regulation Training combines a step-by-step manual for conducting ART with patients with an extensive review of how and why the method works. Introductory chapters analyze the relationship between deficits in emotion regulation and mental dysfunction, explain the theory behind the ART model, and offer practical ideas for optimizing treatment. The manual identifies component skills of ART such as nonjudgmental awareness and compassionate self-support, pinpoints situations in which the skills are beneficial, and provides exercises employing them individually and in combination. An evaluation section features empirical findings and feedback from therapists and clients. Included in the coverage: Emotion regulation: definition and relevance for mental health. Guidelines for effective delivery of ART. Linking ART skills to build successful interventions. Creating goals that result in effective self-management. Recommended education and training for therapists. PLUS a complete ART manual with target skills, delivery modules, and recommended intervention sequences. The richness and flexibility of the ART program makes Affect Regulation Training an important addition to the toolkits of psychologists, psychiatrists, marriage and family therapists, and clinical counselors and social workers, as well as practitioners and administrators in fields such as substance abuse, public mental health, education, medicine, military health, and the justice system.

Abstract

As part of an evaluation of the Marine Corps Operational Stress Control and Readiness (OSCAR) program, this report describes the methods and findings of a large survey of marines who were preparing for a deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan in 2010 or 2011. The results are among the first to shed light on the pre-deployment mental health status of marines, as well as the social resources they draw on when coping with stress and their attitudes about seeking help for stress-related problems.
