Abstract

Henri Cartier-Bresson's work embraced art, politics, revolution, and war. But more powerful than any of these overarching themes was his evident concern for the human individual at every social level. This lavishly illustrated monograph - published to accompany France's first major retrospective since the photographer's death in 2004 - traces Cartier-Bresson's development as a photographer, activist, journalist, and artist. In addition to some of Cartier-Bresson's best-known photographs, included here are many seldom seen or unpublished images and some rarities in color as well as black-and-white. From his earliest photographs in Paris in the 1920s and Africa in the 1930s, Cartier-Bresson's capacity to conjure coherence and harmony out of a chaotic world appears effortless and innate - a deep-centered attitude rather than a merely learned technique. His observations of the effects of poverty and revolution around the world led directly to his pioneering photojournalism and to his co-founding of Magnum Photos. He became renowned for his penetrating portraits of the most prominent figures of his time, becoming, in the words of his biographer Pierre Assouline, 'the eye of the century." -- Publisher.

Abstract

Find out how Alec Soth constructs his projects, why Trent Parke relies on old-fashioned Polaroids and hand-made books, and how forty-one other photographers experiment with new and old technologies, turn their photo-diaries into exhibitions, and attract audiences of millions via online platforms. This book celebrates the creative processes of the modern photographic era, in which blogs and Instagram streams function alongside analog albums and contact sheets, and the traditional notebook takes the form of Polaroid studies, smartphone pictures, found photography, experimental image-making, and self-published photo-zines. Each photographer presents his or her sketchbook: several pages of images that convey his or her working methods and thought processes. These intimate, oneoff presentations are accompanied by engaging interviews that reveal how the simple act of pressing a shutter can capture and express a fully realized personal vision. Three essays by the authors explore subjects at the cutting edge of contemporary practice. Designed to satisfy the most demanding of image junkies, this is an indispensable resource for anyone with an interest in photography or the creative process.

Abstract

"While the work of Duane Michals has always been personal, ABCDuane is the first book to act as a visual memoir by this living legend. Duane Michals is the foremost visual storyteller of our time, and in ABCDuane, he wends through his own creative and biographical narrative in depth. The alphabet explodes into a mythopoeic system in the artist's hands, careening through the ideas, artists, and themes that obsess him. The book is heavily illustrated not only with Michals's own works--including rarely seen and never-before-published portraits, painted tintypes, and color pieces--but also with pieces from his private art collection, donated to the Carnegie Museum of Art. Whether a portrait of Eugene Atget by Berenice Abbott, a collage by Joseph Cornell, or an etching by Manet, the works of these masters sit side by side with Michals's inspired images, further revealing the artist's creative process. Funny, intimate, and unguarded, ABCDuane is the perfect primer and creative autobiography of this beloved artist"--

Abstract

[4] of cover.

Abstract

'Hiroshi Sugimoto: Still Life' includes 'Polar Bear' (1976), his first photograph from the Diorama series, exhibited along with later works from the 1980s, 1990s, and, most recently 2012. Where many of the earlier silver gelatin prints present animals, a number of the 2012 photographs including Mixed Deciduous Forest and Olympic Rain Forest focus on natural landscapes. He has likened the record created by photography to a process of fossilization - the evidence of a moment suspended in time. Hiroshi Sugimoto began to photograph his Dioramas series, a body of work that spans almost four decades, when he moved to New York City from Japan in 1974. While looking at the galleries in the American Museum of Natural History, he noticed that if he looked at the dioramas with one eye closed, the artificial scenes--prehistoric humans, dinosaurs, and taxidermied wild animals set in elaborately painted backgrounds--looked utterly convincing. This visual trick launched his conceptual exploration of the photographic medium, which continues today. Through his career, Sugimoto has addressed the photograph's power to create a history. He has said, "photography functions as a fossilization of time." In the Dioramas series, Sugimoto persuades the viewer that the photographer has captured a lived moment in time, although each scene is an elaborately crafted fiction. Hiroshi Sugimoto: Dioramas narrates a story of the cycle of life, death and rebirth, from prehistoric aquatic life to the propagation of reptile and animal life to homo sapiens' destruction of the planet--and then to a renewal of the earth, where flora and fauna flourish without man. Here Sugimoto writes his own history of the world, an artist's creation myth.

Abstract

Born in Cork, Ireland, Frank Browne (1880-1960) was both a distinguished Jesuit and an accomplished photographer. At age 17, before commencing his studies for the priesthood, he embarked on a tour of Europe armed with a camera. Browne quickly discovered a strong affinity for photography, and continued to take photographs throughout his life. It was not until 1985, however--when Father Edward O'Donnell SJ discovered a large trunk in the Irish Jesuit Provincial's House and found it packed with negatives and photographs--that Browne was catapulted to international fame. Father Browne's remarkable life is recorded in the superb selection of images presented in this book. With wit and a sharp eye, he observed 20th-century Ireland; life as a Jesuit priest; his experience as a passenger on the first leg of the voyage of the Titanic in 1912; and his later travels throughout Europe, Egypt, Yemen, Ceylon, and Australia.--Amazon.com.
