[4] of cover.

"Examines the roles of image producers and the functions of photographic imagery in the documentation of wars, violent conflicts and human rights issues; tackling controversial ideas such as 'witnessing', the making of appeals based on displays of human suffering and the much-cited concept of 'compassion fatigue'."--Back cover. "In the twenty-first century, the advent of digital photography, camera phones and social media platforms has altered the relationship between photographers, the medium and the audience- as well as contributing to an ongoing blurring of the boundaries between news and entertainment and professional and amateur journalism. The heyday of photojournalism was in the first half of the 20th century. Anton Holzer invites you on a fascinating journey through time in pictures and reconstructs the history of the origins of a new medium. He follows the photographers on their adventurous forays, describes their day-to-day work and takes a look at the newspaper editorial offices, where photo reports and reports were created.
