Throughout the history of Christianity, Mary has been a beacon of hope to many who look to her. While Christians have always prayed to Mary, they have also sung to her in times of joy and sorrow. Sing of Mary analyzes Marian hymnody throughout Christianity -- and particularly in the Roman Catholic Church in the United States from 1854 to today -- focusing not only on the texts and music but also on the contexts out of which these hymns came. By using a holistic methodology -- drawing from anthropology, history, liturgy, musicology, psychology, sociology, and theology -- this study takes an interdisciplinary approach toward studying Marian theology and devotion through the lens of hymnody. This volume, accessible to both laypeople and academics, provides readers with a clear and full understanding of Marian hymnody by looking at many examples throughout the history of Christianity up through the present, thus shedding light on the history of Marian devotion and theology. The work concludes by providing hope for the future of Marian congregational song, particularly by exploring how the Magnificat can help Marian congregational song be meaningful to a wide range of Christians.

This beautifully illustrated volume explores aspects of the devotional world of late medieval northern Europe, with a special emphasis on how people interacted with texts, images, artefacts and other instruments of piety at the level of the senses. It focuses on the materiality of medieval religion and the manner in which Christians were encouraged to engage their senses in their devotional practices: gazing, hearing, touching, tasting and committing to memory. In so doing, it brings together the ideals of medieval mystical writing and the increasingly tangible and material practice of piety, which would become characteristic of the period. This is the second volume of the European Network on the Instruments of Devotion (ENID) series.

Ruusbroec is one of the few medieval writers whose work has been read, translated, and commented upon throughout the ages until today. One of the most translated writers in Dutch literature, Ruusbroec brings the literature of the Low Countries onto the world stage. Ruusbroec's genius is paradoxical. His stylistic devices are simple, but his wording flawless. He describes concrete details of daily life, but also seeks to evoke how the everyday participates in spiritual love and the Holy Trinity. He loves the Church, but his criticism of its corruption anticipates Savonarola. He praises secluded life, but also emphasises the universality of such life whereby the true contemplative is a 'common' person. This set of two volumes includes the complete text of all of Ruusbroec's works - the original Middle Dutch version as well as a new English translation - as published in 'Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaevalis', volumes 101 to 110. The edition is preceded by a short Introduction describing Ruusbroec's life and doctrine and summarising the dating and context of the various treatises and letters, and is followed by a source apparatus and index of sources.
