Aflatoxin contamination represents a serious threat to a healthy food supply. Resulting from mold on corn, peanuts, and other grains and grain products, aflatoxins are extremely toxic. Understanding the nature of fungi infection and the factors that favor aflatoxin formation is important to grain producers, dealers, and other professionals who control grain from the field to the site of consumption to prevent serious loss of large quantities of grain or grain products. Producers of poultry, cattle, sheep, pigs, and even pet food need to be aware of the threat of aflatoxin. Participants in the grain industry who grow, store, or process corn and other grains subject to potential infection by aflatoxin should be aware of the risks of fungal infection and aflatoxin contamination, and proper management strategies. The authors focus on the binding of aflatoxin in animal feeds by employing calcium smectite. Readers will be especially glad to know that aflatoxin can often be controlled with a natural mineral material to bind aflatoxin in animal feeds at a modest cost.--

Tropical forage crops used to feed the livestock are of crucial important in the sustainable development of hot regions. The first part of this work is intended to guide the choice of forage plants and their crops (diversity of forage plants and their uses based on environments and livestock systems). The second focuses on the growing and management of forage crops (production techniques from planting to harvesting the crops). The challenges of woody forage, production of forage seed and the economics of forage production are also addressed. A CD-ROM presents case studies, illustrations and sheets for each plant.

WAFL is an international scientific conference on the assessment of animal welfare at farm or group level. Issues addressed during a WAFL conference can be: welfare criteria; welfare indicators and methods to analyse them; automation of measures; ways to deal with a large amount of data from various welfare measures in order to assess the overall welfare of animals; rationales underlying epidemiological studies and risk models; consultation processes; implementation in practice; communication of animal welfare assessment results; and other topics related to animal welfare assessment in practice.

When it comes to any current scientific debate, there are more than two sides to every story. 'Controversies in Science and Technology' analyzes controversial topics in science and technology - infrastructure, ecosystem management, food security and plastics and health - from multiple points of view.

The biomass based energy sector, especially the one based on lignocellulosic sources such as switchgrass Miscanthus, forest residues and short rotation coppice, will play an important role in our drive towards renewable energy. The biomass feedstock production (BFP) subsystem provides the necessary material inputs to the conversion processes for energy production. This subsystem includes the agronomic production of energy crops and the physical handling and delivery of biomass, as well as other enabling logistics. Achieving a sustainable BFP system is therefore paramount for the success of the emerging bioenergy sector. However, low bulk and energy densities, seasonal and weather sensitive availability, distributed supply and lack of commercial scale production experience create unique challenges. Moreover, novel region specific feedstock alternatives continue to emerge. Engineering will play a critical role in addressing these challenges and ensuring the techno-economic feasibility of this sector. It must also integrate with the biological, physical and chemical sciences and incorporate externalities, such as social/economic considerations, environmental impact and policy/regulatory issues, to achieve a truly sustainable system. Tremendous progress has been made in the past few years while new challenges have simultaneously emerged that need further investigation. It is therefore prudent at this time to review the current status and capture the future challenges through a comprehensive book. This work will serve as an authoritative treatise on the topic that can help researchers, educators and students interested in the field of biomass feedstock production, with particular interest in the engineering aspects.
