Abstract

Abstract

In an era of increased reliance on private regulatory bodies and globalised economic activity, standardisation is the field where politics, technical expertise and strategic behaviour meet and interact. International standard-setting bodies exemplify the rise of transnational governance and the challenges that it brings about relating to institutional choice, legitimacy, procedural and substantive fairness or transparency. This book takes a more empirical-based approach focusing on the mechanics of international standard-setting. It constitutes a multidisciplinary inquiry into the foundations of international standard-setting, an empirically under-researched yet important area of international informal lawmaking. Contributors expertly examine the peculiarities of international standardisation in selected issue-areas and legal orders and shed light on the attributes of international standard-setters, allowing comparisons among standard-setting bodies with a view to identifying best practices and improve our understanding about standardisation processes.

Abstract

When turning a design concept into a realizable plan, landscape architects are constantly switching back and forth between two levels : on the one hand, the general planning standards and parameters for different types of open space, and on the other, the particular use-related requirements of the specific planning task. The book 'Planning Landscape. Dimensions, Elements, Typologies' offers the planner a practical guide to achieving this balancing act. It compiles and summarizes dimensions, measurements and threshold values that are crucial to the decision-making process in designing a space. The first chapter explains the basics of, and general conditions for, designing in open spaces. The second chapter deals with measurements of general functional areas such as paths or railings. The third chapter focuses on special types of open spaces : dimensions of playing fields or of recreation areas in schoolyards, for example. The final chapter lists production-related dimensions for certain building materials, such as maximum and minimum sizes of prefabricated products or the working widths of tools and machinery. Aspects of barrier-free construction and sustainable planning approaches are integrated into each chapters.

Abstract

This book provides a coherent methodology for Model-Driven Requirements Engineering which stresses the systematic treatment of requirements within the realm of modelling and model transformations. The underlying basic assumption is that detailed requirements models are used as first-class artefacts playing a direct role in constructing software. To this end, the book presents the Requirements Specification Language (RSL) that allows precision and formality, which eventually permits automation of the process of turning requirements into a working system by applying model transformations and code generation to RSL. The book is structured in eight chapters. The first two chapters present the main concepts and give an introduction to requirements modelling in RSL. The next two chapters concentrate on presenting RSL in a formal way, suitable for automated processing. Subsequently, chapters 5 and 6 concentrate on model transformations with the emphasis on those involving RSL and UML. Finally, chapters 7 and 8 provide a summary in the form of a systematic methodology with a comprehensive case study. Presenting technical details of requirements modelling and model transformations for requirements, this book is of interest to researchers, graduate students and advanced practitioners from industry. While researchers will benefit from the latest results and possible research directions in MDRE, students and practitioners can exploit the presented information and practical techniques in several areas, including requirements engineering, architectural design, software language construction and model transformation. Together with a tool suite available online, the book supplies the reader with what it promises: the means to get from requirements to code “in a snap”.
